Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Paediatric Spinal Surgeon

The closing date is 11 June 2025

Job summary

We are inviting applications for a full time substantive Paediatric Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon. The job plan within the job description is indicative and will be subject to some adaptation in discussion with the successful candidate. This post is entirely based at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust.

The successful candidate will demonstrate competency in complex paediatric orthopaedic spinal surgery, with completed fellowship training in paediatric orthopaedic spinal surgery. The role includes treating severe spinal deformity in medically complex and high-risk children and as such the successful candidate must be able to operate independently as the lead surgeon in complex neuromuscular scoliosis cases. The role requires clinical experience with classic and contemporary techniques of paediatric orthopaedic spinal surgery.

An equivalent research background/higher degree in the field would be an additional benefit, as would be formal training in areas such as medical education, service improvement and change management, or clinical leadership.

The Department currently comprises two substantive orthopaedic spine surgeons and five substantive paediatric orthopaedic surgeons (with a sixth due to start August 2025). The complexity of patients requires close collaborative working with other disciplines in the Trust and other NHS Trusts.

Main duties of the job

This post is at the grade of consultant. It is a full-time appointment based solely at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. The successful candidate, in conjunction with the existing consultant body, will be responsible for delivering the orthopaedic spinal service (including a 24-hour on-call service) at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

The key focus of this post is paediatric spinal surgery. This includes clinical care in form of elective and non-elective surgery, regular multi-disciplinary meetings, and audit. The Department offers an on-call service for all in-patients and also for patients in the region requiring specialist anaesthetic care or paediatric intensive care. On call activities include the treatment of all acute paediatric orthopaedic conditions such as infection or fractures in patients with complex trauma if transferred to the Trust's intensive care unit. There is no Accident & Emergency department at this hospital. The consultants work closely together and there is opportunity for discussion of patients in the monthly spinal MDT. It is not unusual for consultants to operate together and there is a good working relationship within the department.
