Job summary

If you have an interest in laboratory work, this is an ideal opportunity for you to take on a supporting role in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratories at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

We are a team of 30 persons, providing 24/7 Haematology and Blood Transfusion services to the Hospital, as part of the Rapid Response Laboratory.

You will be trained in the Haemostasis, Haematology and Blood Transfusion sections of the laboratory. After completion of training, participation in the established shift pattern of the department is required. Shifts include Monday-Friday 09:00-17:30 and Monday-Friday 10:30-19:00.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide laboratory support to Scientific staff including specimen reception, laboratory tasks, equipment maintenance
  • undertake general laboratory filing and administration
  • Undertake ordering of stationery and other items
  • Provide support to scientific staff in updating documents on the document control system
  • Specimen reception: checking patient information and sample type, sorting and numbering of specimens
  • To follow procedures for the receipt of correctly labelled specimens and inform lab staff of any errors
  • To assist with clinical work in the laboratory as required
  • To inform senior laboratory staff of urgent work, any incidents and abnormal or clinically significant results as soon as possible
  • To carry out scheduled equipment maintenance in conjunction with the laboratory scientific staff
  • Comply with quality standards required in service provision and participate in internal and external quality control
  • Comply with health and safety requirements at all times
