Job summary
This is a Locum Consultant 6PA role and the post holder will be part of the Dental and Maxillofacial Department, in the Sight & Sound Division.
Flexible working and job share will be considered with a minimum commitment of one day per week.
The department provides maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic services and paediatric and restorative dentistry within the trust. Paediatric dental services are provided for children cared for by The North Thames Cleft Lip and Palate Service and the nationally commissioned Craniofacial and Epidermolysis Bullosa Services. In addition, care is provided for children and young people, usually already known to the Trust, who have complex medical needs that cannot be met outside a tertiary/quaternary children's hospital. Over 5000 patients are seen annually as outpatients within the dental department. The inpatient workload is just under 300 episodes.
The department has approximately 5-6 half day operating lists per week shared between the specialities. Children having dental treatment under general anaesthesia are admitted under a relevant medical team that is responsible for the inpatient medical care. In addition, the department tries to accommodate requests for ad hoc treatments or piggyback procedures during general anaesthesia for other procedures.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties include outpatients and occasional inpatient GA treatment. Sessions will be dedicated to new patient/review clinics, treatment (with or without inhalation sedation) and theatre lists. The post holder will participate in clinical supervision, support and teaching the junior staff, therapists and hygienists.
Specific clinical duties
- To provide comprehensive restorative dental care for appropriate patients, including on an outpatient and inpatient basis.
- Treatment planning within the multidisciplinary team, with particular liaison with maxillofacial surgical and orthodontic colleagues.
- Provision of obturator prostheses, speech prosthetics and nasal obturators.
- Attainment of the necessary continuing dental education and professional development criteria.
- The post holder will be expected to work closely with other members of the maxillofacial and dental team and other key professionals, especially medical, surgical and anaesthetic colleagues with a focus on cleft and craniofacial teams.
- Assessment and triage of new patient referral letters.
- Clinical administration - letters and emails.
- Liaison with other medical teams and departments to promote good oral health.
