Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified BMS in the Haematology Laboratory within the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

Your primary role will be to provide scientific expertise, technical support and leadership within the Haematology Laboratory, as well as assisting the Laboratory Manager with maintaining the QMS in compliance with UKAS accreditation and ISO:15189 (2022) standards.

Expertise in routine Haematology including Blood Film Morphology is essential to the role. With your knowledge of laboratory analytical equipment you will provide training and support to the Laboratory Team. You will work in conjunction with other members of the laboratory senior BMS Team.

Applications are invited from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with proven post registration experience in Haematology. Applicants should also have obtained or be working towards a higher qualification in Biomedical Science (eg MSc, FIMBS/HSD in Haematology).

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake laboratory techniques to a high standard of technical excellence in line with department standard operating procedures. This includes troubleshooting of assays and procedures
  • To operate and maintain (where appropriate) laboratory equipment in prescribed manner, including minor equipment repairs, the management of preventative maintenance records for all equipment, and the assessment of supplier reports for compliance
  • To authorise and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis
  • To communicate with the service users regarding issues affecting the quality of results
  • To take responsibility for ensuring that the internal quality control compliance is maintained, as well as basic analyser maintenance and other tasks performed by colleagues
  • To perform impact assessments in conjunction with the Laboratory Manager and/or Quality Lead where breaches of quality standards may impact patient safety eg temperature deviation or IQC failure
  • To plan and take responsibility for the efficient and effective organisation of work and staff within the laboratory
  • To supervise junior members of staff to undertake the technical work, ensuring effective management of the staff within the section by supporting with any technical or scientific issues that arise
