Job summary
The Children's Acute Transport Service aims to provide the highest quality paediatric intensive care for patients and their families from the point of referral to the handover of care at the receiving paediatric intensive care unit.
The service is designed to make intensive care rapidly available to critically ill children in North Thames and East Anglia. This is a regionally funded service that transfers children to the 4 main PICUs in the North Thames East Anglia Region.
The service provides 24-hour, 365-day, Consultant led telephone advice and a triaging facility for all referrals and is committed to improving and developing the provision of critical care and critical care transport for all patients within its scope of care.
The CATS service remains the busiest dedicated paediatric intensive care (PIC) retrieval service in the UK, handling over 2200 referrals and undertaking over 1200 retrievals a year.
The CATS administrator is critical to maintaining open lines of communication for all those who buy in to the service. (The district general hospitals, the specialist paediatric intensive care teams, the PICU in which the service sits, Imperial, Royal Brompton and Royal London)
Main duties of the job
To provide the following:
Call handling, following the standard operating guidance in relation to the referral process when handling a referral call.
Accurate documentation of referral information and follow the correct procedure to register referrals on the Trust's patient management system and the department's database.
Accurate recording of telephone messages, and ensure all information is forwarded appropriately to the relevant team member within the required timeframe.
Support the Service Support Manager in keeping accurate information and provide reports when required.
Keep accurate and up-to-date information in relation to the clinical team members and that this information is updated as necessary and handed over to in coming shift admin team member.
Ability to be able to track journey progress and maintain situational awareness, ensuring that the on-duty consultant is made aware of any delays.
- To provide efficient conference calls within the service, ensuring smooth communication throughout the retrieval process
- In liaison with the duty consultant, ensure close collaboration with other services, such as other paediatric intensive care transport teams and hospitals in order to update records of intensive care bed availability as required.
