Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced senior clinical psychologist to join the Psychological and Mental Health Services department at Great Ormond Street Hospital in a permanent role. The post holder will work as part of a stream of clinical psychologists within the Specialist Health Conditions Stream which covers six medical specialties.

The post holder will be working in a senior service lead role within the dermatology psychology team, in addition to offering input to other specialties within the stream as required. The Dermatology Team provides both nationally commissioned specialist services and tertiary level services to families locally and nationally.

Living with skin disease can adversely impact on all aspects of young people's lives, including a negative impact on psychological wellbeing, mental health and self-esteem. Psychological input is valued by the dermatology team with common reasons including procedural fear, family adjustment to medical needs, treatment adherence, appearance-related difficulties and body image concern.

This post also provides oversight of the psychological input to the Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) team (a Paediatric EB Centre of Excellence) as well as direct clinical work with children with this condition and their families.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will lead the systematic delivery of high quality, evidence based clinical psychology services to patients and families as part of the multidisciplinary dermatology team. They will also be expected to provide consultation and expertise to the staff teams working within these services. In addition they will provide clinical leadership within the psychology team, with responsibility for supervision of junior colleagues, service governance and management, innovation and organization.

Clinically, the post holder will be required to deliver highly specialist assessment, complex formulations and interventions relevant to the service (e.g. for information sharing about diagnoses; adjustment to living with a medical condition, procedural anxiety, treatment adherence, psychological issues related to having a medical condition etc). The role includes a mixture of inpatient and outpatient work and involves close working within medical MDTs and clinics as a key part of the role. We work with children and young people from 0-18 years and their families. Knowledge and experience in managing complex safeguarding issues will be important.
