The occupational therapy team at Great Ormond Street Hospital currently have a vacancy for an experienced occupational therapist within the Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) Service.This post involves providing clinical occupational therapy input for children and young people undergoing SDR surgery.The successful candidate will carry out occupational therapy assessment and interventionwithin this specialist area, providing expert input and advice to children, young people and families accessing this service as both inpatients and outpatients. Applicants should have experience working with children and young people with cerebral palsy in either an acute oroutpatient setting. The post holder will be one of 35 occupational therapists and occupationaltherapy assistants, who work across the hospital, within multiple specialist areas. They will be supported by the Band 8 clinical specialist occupational therapist leading the neurodisabilityservice through regular supervision and will have access to both our department In servicetraining and leadership programmes run by the Education department. There are opportunities to engage in quality improvement and assurance programmes, and engagement in audit and research is actively encouraged
Main duties of the job
Involves provision of occupational therapy assessment and intervention within the SDR service. This specialist service requires expert knowledge and experience of working with children and young people with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy whose movement difficulties impact their ability to engage in school and home-based occupations. The ability to liaise with and support local services to provide evidence-based follow up interventions once the hospital-based aspects of the patient pathway are complete is therefore essential. Knowledge of upper limb anatomy and the evidence-base behind upper-limb interventions are a necessity in order to ensure that the children and young people are supported to make functional gains. The ability to promote a functional approach that both enables engagement in meaningful occupations and promotes participation is also required. Responsible for providing intervention that supports and enables these children and young people to engage in chosen occupations as much as possible, and to utilise a variety of therapeutic approaches to promote motivation and wider participation.
The role also includes working with families to support their understanding of their child's condition and the impact it may have on their everyday life.We are looking for an experienced occupational therapist who is working at an Enhanced Level, with the ability to offer evidence-based assessments and intervention to children and young people undergoing SDR surgery.
