Job summary

Senior Healthcare Scientist (0.8 WTE) Immunology Laboratory, Department of Laboratory Medicine This is a 3-year fixed term Band 7 post, for a well-motivated and enthusiastic scientist to support the diagnostic Immunology service at GOSH.The Immunology Laboratory at Great Ormond Street Hospital provides diagnostic services to the Trust, including allergy, autoimmunity, immunophenotyping, cell culture and proteins, as well as a national specialist molecular diagnostic service for immune deficiency.You will undertake routine and research investigations and duties to provide support to the team in all the areas highlighted in the job description.

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out laboratory investigations on paediatric samples unsupervised as requested by the clinical services, taking responsibility for quality and accuracy of the results produced.
  • To have knowledge of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in use within the department and be proficient in the most frequently performed techniques and update SOPs as required
  • To validate and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis. Under supervision to authorise reports where trained
  • To add clinically relevant comments, in line with laboratory policy
  • To report and discuss quality and other issues with senior members of staff and those present at lab meetings
  • To ensure analytical accuracy, and confidentiality of results observing the Data Protection Act, using the laboratory computer system.
  • To participate, in collaboration with colleagues in research projects within the department and across the directorate and ICH. Also, to assist in the development of new technologies and tests within the department as required.
  • Participate in the training and supervision of technical staff, seconded trainee clinical scientists, clinical scientists, seconded SpRs and overseas visitors
  • Order reagents/equipment in line with Trust policy
