Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS FT
Consultant in Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care (10 PAs)
Applications are invited for a substantive, full-time post of Consultant in Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care based at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust.
The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit with 19 commissioned beds is one of the largest in the UK dedicated to the care of children with congenital and acquired heart disease with over 700 annual admissions.
The hospital is the lead centre for paediatric intensive care for North Thames and tertiary centre for Cardiothoracic Services for children. In addition to providing comprehensive care for critically ill children with complex heart disease, the unit provides care for 5 highly specialised services: extracorporeal life support (ECLS) for neonatal and paediatric respiratory failure, transplant bridging programme, heart/lung transplantation, national tracheal service, and pulmonary hypertension service. There are plans to expand with additional high dependency/enhanced recovery care capacity.
Clinical experience in paediatric cardiac intensive care, ECLS including ventricular assist devices and heart/lung transplantation is essential; and experience in paediatric cardiology is desirable. Supporting programmed activities are expected to include education, research and clinical governance.
Main duties of the job
Two consultants will be on call every day on CICU, with an additional consultant Monday to Friday who is responsible for the highly specialised services activity in the CICU. The 'on call' consultants are on call for 24 hours with two additional hours allocated to handover and patient related administrative duties. We currently operate 21 CICU beds.
The on-call commitment for this post will thus initially be providing approximately one in 6.5 on-call commitment. This is currently non-resident, and the longest period of clinical duty is currently 24 hours. During periods where the consultant is not 'on service' or leave, it is expected that he/she will be available to provide day-time clinical support to the CICU, if necessary.
With expansion of the CICU, and to improve consultant input to patients and supervision for trainees, work patterns may be subject to change after consultation with the consultant body, which may include moving to a partial shift system.
During periods where the consultant is not 'on service'-either as the first or 'support consultant' there will be the time to undertake the administrative duties of the post, such as clinical summaries, audit, teaching and appraisal. The job plan also includes attendance at weekly unit clinical meetings including the CICU complex and long stay multidisciplinary case conferences, joint cardiac conferences, the Friday clinical governance meeting and the CICU unit meetings.
