The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital with 19 commissioned beds is one of the largest in the UK dedicated to the care of children with congenital and acquired heart disease with over 700 admissions annually.
The unit provides comprehensive care for critically ill children with complex heart disease including nearly 600 open heart surgeries/year. In addition, the unit provides care for 5 highly specialised services which include extracorporeal life support (ECLS) for neonatal and paediatric respiratory failure, mechanical circulatory support including ventricular assist devices (VAD) programme, heart/lung transplantation (largest in Europe), dedicated national Tracheal programme and national paediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Service.
The CICU team is committed to advancing the field of paediatric cardiac critical care through continuous education, research, and innovation. With the hospital being the lead centre for paediatric intensive care for North Thames, the CICU training provided is bespoke and comprehensive.
Main duties of the job
- To provide medical care to patients on cardiac intensive care and ensure efficient service delivery within cardiac intensive care services
- To work in close co-operation with the wider multi-disciplinary team including cardiorespiratory and intensive care services
- Co-ordinate care of children on cardiac intensive care, including those with complex congenital heart disease, extracorporeal life support or ventricular assist device.
The appointees will be required to take a share in all activities of the unit, and supervise and support the more junior members of the clinical team.
Although an agreed duty rota is carefully followed, occasional emergency cover may be required.
Unit and hospital protocols and clinical practice guidelines exist and the post holder is expected to adopt management which takes note of these. In particular the Unit has a firm policy with regard to all admissions and discharges which should be adhered to.
