Job summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant to help support the diagnostic work of the department.

Candidates are expected to at least have previous experience as a Medical Laboratory Assisant or to have worked in a diagnostic laboratory. A key eye to details and working in an organised manner is crucial to this role.

The department provides an extensive range of investigations to support the specialist patient population of this tertiary referral paediatric hospital, and also provides a specialist service to other hospitals. This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of a very experienced and dedicated team to gain extra skills and knowledge of paediatric microbiology.

This is a vibrant, progressive, well equipped, and a ISO15189 accredited laboratory.

Main duties of the job

This position is to support the scientific & technical work in the Microbiology and Virology Department, ensuring that all procedures are undertaken according to laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and the policies, especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality. The role will also participate in the out of hour weekend rota. Duties include:

  • Ensure all samples prepared for analysis and stored according to strict quality standards, as defined in departmental Standard Operating Procedures
  • Ensure that appropriate preventative maintenance has been carried out, and recorded, on basic laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Regular monitoring and maintenance of laboratory equipment including pre-analytical equipment, centrifuges, fridges media, disinfectant and reagent preparation
  • Sorting, logging and despatch of samples to other hospitals, inside and outside the Trust
  • Stock control of supplies related to pre-analytical testing, and basic laboratory consumables, ensuring stock rotation and storage in correct areas
  • Handling telephone and visitor enquiries in a professional manner.
  • Entering patient request data into IT systems
