Band 8a Principal Speech and Language Therapist in Neurodisability: Complex Neurology 0.6 wte -Permanent
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Speech and Language Therapy Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital, as part of the Neurodisability Team. The Neurodisability service is a Multi-disciplinary Team that delivers tertiary level care to children with complex medical conditions. This post is a clinical lead specialism in epilepsy and brain injury.A high level of experience is required in the assessment and differential diagnosis of speech, language and communication differences for children with complex neurodevelopmental conditions including epilepsy, autism, language and speech disorders and learning disability. This includes leading the team in assessment of children in the national Children's Epilepsy Surgery Service (CESS); Developmental Epilepsy service; Sturge Weber and Neurocutaneous Syndromes service. In addition, experience and understanding of community services and a range of education provisions are complimentary to this post. The post holder acts as an advisor to community colleagues. You will have access to high quality supervision, training and development programs.

Main duties of the job
- To provide a specialist speech and language therapy service to a high level of expertise consisting of: assessment, differential diagnosis, interpretation, management and outcomes to children and adolescents with communication difficulties associated with complex neurological conditions. This is within the context of a multidisciplinary team assessment. This may include attendance at case conferences and joint clinic meetings as necessary
- To understand and use a full range of diagnostic assessments for children in this population (formal and informal speech and language assessments).
- To act as clinical advisor in the area of specialism both within the Trust and to external agencies with regard to children and young people with a Neurodisability
- To work as an independent practitioner accessing the Department's supervision system and seeking and maintaining peer support from other specialist practitioners in line with clinical governance and professional guidelines
- To monitor and evaluate own highly specialist service delivery and provide progress reports to the Team Leader.
- To have responsibility for supporting the SLT team in teaching in the specialist subject
- To present the specialised subject in an evidence- based framework and at an appropriate level to a wide range of audiences (e.g. parents, teachers, medical colleagues, Allied Health Professionals, consumer groups) in consultation with the team leader/clinical expert.
