Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Nurse/ODP, to join the Nurse-led sedation Team in Radiology. We run the ONLY nurse-led sedation unit in the UK, caring for patients from admission through to discharge, working with children of all ages and specialities. Previous sedation experience is not essential and can all be taught in the role.

If you are looking for a change from the daily routine of a ward setting and wanting to develop your acute nursing skills then this may be the role for you! This position would allow for role expansion in areas such as cannulation, venepuncture and thorough telephone patient assessments. The unit is committed to the training and development of staff and each individual is supported by the ANP, CNS and Practice Educator.

The Radiology Department is formed of a small team of nurses, ATP's and HCA's that work alongside the larger multi-disciplinary team which includes Radiographers, Radiologists, Anaesthetists, ODP's, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Administration Staff.

Main duties of the job

The Sedation Nurse Practitioners cover a dynamic Radiology Department which includes MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, X-ray, Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy. The department images and carries out procedures on children from birth to 18 years of age from all specialities throughout the hospital.

The Radiology Department is formed of a small team of sedation nurses that work alongside the larger multi-disciplinary team which includes Radiographers, Radiologists, Anaesthetists, ODP's, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Healthcare Assistance and Administration Staff.

MRI, CT and NM scans require patients to lie incredibly still potentially for a long period of time in order to obtain clear, diagnostic imaging. Due to age and/or condition, not all patients are able to do this naturally and therefore require the help of sedation or a GA.

The families start by receiving a pre-admission phone call prior to their scan date. At the preadmission call, parents will be asked a number of questions by a Sedation Nurse Practitioner to establish how best to obtain the images required.

If the patient is assessed to complete their scan under sedation they will be admitted on the day of their appointment directly to the Radiology Department (Otter). They will be clerked, consented and prescribed for by a Sedation Nurse Practitioner and once the scan is completed and discharge criteria is achieved will be directly discharged from the department.
