Opportunity for a maternity leave cover working within The North Thames Cleft Lip and Palate. service as a band 6 nurse
The role will provide insight into this highly specialist role with an multi disciplinary team.
The successful applicant will essentially be required to work at the twin site at Broomfield Hospital to support to the band 7 nurse specialists.
However, opportunities can be sought at the Great Ormond street site also where the service requires. The role will enable to applicant to have a greater understanding of each member of the multidisciplinary team such as the surgeon, psychologist, speech therapists and orthodontist. This will provide the nurse with the ability to support the infant , child and adolescent on their journey
Essentially the role will be to support families with a baby with cleft lip and palate for early feeding advice and psychological support especially at the multidisciplinary clinics, feeding clinic and paediatric clinics. The specialist nurse will be required to run their own peri operative support clinics providing pre and post operative advice as well as support to the ward nurses at Broomfield during the hospital admission.
Dependent on experience the nurse would provide specialist feeding advice and airway management under the supervision of the band 7 /band 8a nurse specialist.
Main duties of the job
- To support the nursing team to provide counselling, support and information to parents, children and families, throughout their treatment in the hospital and clinic for primary surgery.
- Active presence across the North Thames region mainly Broomfield hospital and the service with Essex and East London.
- To manage a small caseload of Cleft babies from birth to completion of primary surgery and support the band 7 and 8 a nurse.
- Provision and receipt of all feeding equipment for all cleft children to include maintenance of stock.
- Provide pre-operative management liaising with multidisciplinary team within Pre-admission assessment clinic providing families with information regarding pre and post op -care.
- To visit all post-operative Cleft patients in the ward setting and provide suitable support to patient, family and clinical staff to facilitate recovery and discharge.
- To arrange peri operative clinic support under the direction of the band 7 and 8a a nurse. This maybe telephone advice, face to face or home support
- Participate in multidisciplinary team clinics i.e. Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic and to act as an advocate for the child and family ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services. Undertake an active role in the coordination and smooth running of the Clinic.
- Involvement in multi disciplinary clinics including dysphagia, speech, genetics and paediatrics.
- Participate with high level safe guarding and be an partake in safeguarding supervision.
