Job summary

A rare opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Health Care Assistant to join the renal team on Eagle Ward. This is a full time vacancy.Eagle Ward currently comprises of 14 inpatient beds and an ambulatory Haemodialysis unit, staff rotate between the two areas: Eagle Acute and Eagle Haemodialysis. Both areas provide specialist care to Neonates, Infants, Children and Adolescents.

Eagle Acute cares for patients with renal disease, including Acute, Chronic and End Stage Kidney Disease. We also undertake both live-related and Deceased Donor Renal Transplantation and care for patients requiring Peritoneal Dialysis.

Eagle Ward provides ancillary staff with the chance to develop and enhance their patient care and to provide a high standard of care to their allocated patients. We have established a robust educational programme including comprehensive specialist workbooks, a renal foundation course and the trust also runs a yearly HCA training programme: enabling you to provide a high standard of holistic family centred care to children and their families. As a senior HCA you would provide expert peritoneal dialysis to patients requiring renal replacement therapy, support families with training and provide expert teaching to new staff. Following relevant experience within renal care and in house training Band 4 HCAs can also undertake aspects of haemodialysis.

Main duties of the job

Eagle Ward opened in 2012 and Healthcare Assistants on this ward play an important part in ensuring patients are provided with a healthy, safe and secure environment. They are required to provide this autonomously as well as through supporting the housekeepers and qualified nurses.On Eagle ward we strive to provide high standards of nursing care and believe the team of Healthcare Assistants are integral to maintaining such standards.

To work collaboratively as part of the healthcare team, helping registered nurses and other healthcare practitioners in the work associated with providing care to meet the health and well-being of the child/young person and their families:

Carry out clinical procedures/tasks as required and under indirect supervision.

To co-ordinate the organisation and management of the junior HCAs within the Renal Unit.

To become phlebotomy competent and assist in the training of others.

To provide Peritoneal dialysis to patients requiring renal replacement therapy.

Assist in training new staff to become peritoneal dialysis competent.

Support and train families learning home dialysis therapies.

To be involved in regular audits and stock takes. To maintain safe and efficient running of the unit.
