Job summary

Do you want to extend your skills and help us help transform the quality of NHS genetic services? We are seeking an enthusiastic person, ideally with a background in genetics to join our Genetics Associate team based in the North Thames Genomic Medicine Service based at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, but working predominantly with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation trust.

The NHS Genomic Medicine Service has recently introduced whole genome sequencing to improve diagnosis of rare and inherited conditions and cancer and we are seeking genomics associates to help establish these pathways, work with clinicians to enable informed consenting of patients for testing and the national research library. In addition, we would anticipate that you will support other genomic research ongoing in the department

This is an ideal post for someone either considering training as a genetic counsellor or looking for a career in genomics research. If you are committed to contributing to a team delivering excellence and serious about pursuing a rewarding career this is definitely the post for you. These Band 5 posts are available immediately and will be for 7 months in the first instance. You will be joining an enthusiastic, friendly, motivated multidisciplinary team working within a centre of excellence in central London.

You will get experience in genetics whilst gaining research skills as you work with clinical teams across North Thames.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of the GLH and GMSA teams to support clinicians requesting WGS, with particular emphasis on the research consent.
  • To build and maintain effective working relationships with staff members both within Clinical Genetics, in other departments in the Trust and with external agencies e.g. other partner Trusts and their clinicians requesting WGS
  • To liaise with the Genetics Counsellors/Consultants/other members of the clinical team in order to clarify source data which may be unclear, prior to data entry, helping to facilitate accurate data entry and working with the clinical teams to enter complex data.
  • To support the GLH team in collecting, collating and submitting data to bodies such as NHS England and Genomics England ensuring data quality checks are undertaken prior to submission and assisting in identifying and rectifying areas of incomplete data
  • To be responsible for responding to data queries within their set timeframe, liaising with the clinicians, GLH team and Genetics Counselors / Clinicians in order to analyse the reason for the discrepancy in the data, in order that this can be rectified/action taken.
  • To work with the GLH team to manage a phone line for research consent for WGS
  • To take and make telephone calls to families to offer/confirm consent
  • Liaise and work effectively with the GLH and GMSA and all members of the multidisciplinary teams in order to assist with the research consent for WGS and work towards embedding it in clinical practice.
