Job summary

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic bioinformatician funded by the NIHR Great Ormond Street Biomedical Research Centre and Great Ormond Street Children's Charity to join our team based in the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Our team is delivering transformation in patient care by using circulating cell free DNA to develop new approaches to diagnosis and monitoring, developing pipelines for rapid, comprehensive diagnosis of paediatric conditions such as early onset epilepsy using whole genome sequencing and utilising long read sequencing technologies to transform clinical services.

This Band 7 post is available immediately for two years. You will be joining an enthusiastic, friendly, motivated multidisciplinary research team working closely with the Clinical Bioinformatics team. This is an ideal opportunity to seriously contribute to translating research into clinical practice for the benefit of patients. This post is suitable for research or postdoctoral bioinfomaticians wanting to explore the exciting area of translational research or for clinical Bioinformaticians who want to broaden their horizons with research experience.

Main duties of the job

  • Assume responsibility alongside the lead Bioinformatician and Translational Scientist for the translational bioinformatics research work in the RD lab hub at Great Ormond Street NHS Foundation Trust, whilst working closely with the GOSH BRC, UCL Genomics and the cancer Hub at the Royal Marsden Hospital to ensure alignment and sharing of practices across the BRC and GLH
  • To provide high end bioinformatics knowledge and support in the delivery of a reliable, competitive, efficient, cost effective and high-quality research and development programme that ultimately contributes to the diagnostic service
  • To pro-actively propose and develop improvements and research methodologies
  • To work closely with the Clinical Bioinformatics team and translational scientist team along with other GLHs as required to facilitate the translation of research to clinical service.
  • To develop collaborative projects with fellow professionals from across the GLH and other national and international institutions as appropriate
  • To publish service and research findings in high quality, peer-reviewed journals
  • To establish and maintain excellent working relationships with professional colleagues within the BRC and it's Paediatric Excellence Initiative partners in Birmingham, UCL Genomics, NT GLH, other GLHs, and national and international collaborators
