Patient Safety Partners

Job summary

The way the NHS understands and learns from incidents is changing. In 2019 NHS England, the organisation that manages all NHS Trusts, shared a new plan called the Patient Safety Strategy.

Listening to our patients is a key part of this strategy. One of the main parts of this is creating a new role, called the Patient Safety Partner. This is a new role across the NHS, and more information about it nationally can be found here.

The Patient Safety Partner, or PSP, will work closely with the people in the Trust whose job is to keep patients safe. They will act as the patient voice in meetings with senior leaders and help to develop projects and programmes aimed at making a patients experience of GOSH even better.

We're aiming to have 4 PSPs at GOSH. 2 young people, who are current or former patients, and two parents or carers, who have experience of helping to support their loved one through treatment. The aim is for each of the 4 PSPs to complete two days a month of work supporting GOSH's patient safety programmes. These PSPs will use their lived experience to help us develop our safety programmes in the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Some examples of what the work might look like might include:

  • Be part of project teams working to improve safe care and our systems
  • Talking with patients and staff about safety and what matters to them
  • Help us understand what we do well and how we can do this more of the time
  • Help develop patient safety information resources, like guides and checklists
  • Acting as the patient voice on improvement projects
  • Support some of the patient safety training of staff
  • Join meetings with the executive team and senior managers to check and challenge
  • Joining interview panels for staff patient safety roles
  • In future, supporting the safety team when reviewing incident

There role pays up to £150 a day, or £75 for a half day's work. We're looking for a maximum of two days a month involvement from our PSPs. This can be split across the month to suit your needs. All the details are available in the role descriptions .
