Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a biomedical scientist to join our team in the metabolic laboratory within chemical pathology at Great Ormond Street Hospital. This is a busy laboratory providing a specialist service for the diagnosis & monitoring of inborn errors of metabolism to internal patients, patients from external hospitals and overseas. It is well equipped with GC-MS, Tandem MS, HPLC & UHPLC systems. We are fully accredited to ISO 15189.This position is fixed within the metabolic unit and the successful candidate will be expected to work closely with our current team, liaising with the metabolic clinical team, dieticians & external service users on a regular basis. You will take part in daily running of metabolic assays, sample preparation, equipment maintenance & troubleshooting. A keen interest in the area of metabolic biochemistry is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake laboratory techniques in line with department standard operating procedures
  • To carry out all laboratory investigations to a high standard of technical excellence.
  • To be able to work independently within their areas of knowledge and expertise
  • To authorise and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis
  • To ensure that all results are reported within agreed turn- around times
  • To add clinically relevant comments, in line with laboratory policy
  • To take responsibility for the internal quality control and the external quality assessment schemes for designated tests
  • To assist in the management of the departmental quality systems as directed by the laboratory manager and quality manager
  • To plan and take responsibility for the efficient and effective organisation of work
  • Supervises and undertakes the technical work
