Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a keen scientist to join our team in the metabolic laboratory within the department of Chemical Pathology at Great Ormond Street Hospital. This is a busy laboratory providing a specialist service for the diagnosis & monitoring of a range of inborn errors of metabolism.The laboratory provides a service to patients within Great Ormond Street Hospital, patients from external hospitals and overseas. We also work with research and industry partners. We are fully accredited to UKAS (ISO 15189) standards.We are looking for someone with to work with teams at the Institute of Child Health & Great Ormond Street hospital to set up new diagnostic methods using liquid chromatography & mass spectrometry techniques. The post-holder would be accountable for method development, validation and training. The successful candidate will have experience of working in a diagnostic laboratory, and/or demonstrable experience of method development. A keen interest in metabolic biochemistry is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake laboratory techniques in line with department standard operating procedures
  • To carry out all laboratory investigations to a high standard of technical excellence
  • To be able to work independently within their areas of knowledge and expertise
  • To assist in the management of the departmental quality systems as directed by the laboratory manager and quality manager
  • To assume responsibility for ensuring appropriate quality systems are in place and maintained
  • To plan and take responsibility for the efficient and effective organisation of work
  • Supervises and undertakes the technical work
  • To keep a check of stocks, reagents and consumables and to order supplies as appropriate
  • To train and supervise Medical Laboratory assistants, Trainee Biomedical Scientists and less experienced members of staff
  • To keep and maintain records of training and competency
  • To ensure safe working of self and colleagues and to work within the code of practise described in the Departmental Safety Manual and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
