Job summary
The Lymphoedema Nurse Specialist service provides specialist assessment and treatment for patients who have Lymphoedema (excess swelling) directly associated with their cancer.
The post holder will be a Specialist Practitioner in Lymphoedema, demonstrating a high level of expertise within Lymphoedema management. They will provide specialist advice, education and support to other health care professionals and patients, and undertake clinical audits and research within the specialist area. They will diagnose and independently prescribe for patients with lymphoedema. The role will focus on those aspects that require a higher level of expertise and experience, whether in direct clinical care or the supervision and development of other health care professionals.
The Lymphoedema Team consists of 2 Nurse Specialists, 1 senior nurse, 1 Associate Nurse and is supported by a Team Administrator. The service works 5 days a week Monday to Friday. The clinics are based in the Wellbeing at Cynthia Spencer building in Northampton and are supported by the Consultants in Palliative Medicine on an ad hoc basis for specific complex patient needs
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be the team lead for the service along with a fellow colleague. The post holder is expected to provide a clinical service to patients on a one to one basis in a clinic based environment.
The post holder will be responsible for contributing to the ongoing development of clinical practice, research and standards of care within the service, including development of policies, protocols and guidelines and contribute to service developments in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues. The post holder will also ensure the safety and wellbeing of services users, and always work in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centered care principles.
Depending on the skills and qualifications the post holder has, there may be a requirement to undertake specialist courses to ensure they can safely administer treatment, the expectation will be for these courses to be completed within 12 months of joining the team. Whilst the Lympoedema service presently hosts clinics in Northampton only, in the future should clinics be offered elsewhere in the County it is expected the post holder will support those clinics (with appropriate reimbursement of travel expenses).
On occasions, the post holder will be required to 'cover' for the Service Manager when they are on leave, this is on a rota basis along with other team leads within Specialist Palliative Care, appropriate training will be provided.
