Job summary
You will be responsible for delivering a planned programme of pre operative care for elective surgical patients without direct supervision. After a period of organisational and departmental induction you will be acting as a link professional with the ability to take charge as necessary.
Main duties of the job
- Undertake and document a comprehensive medical history and accurate nursing assessment of the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of your patients.
- Formulate and document a plan of pre-operative nursing care, where possible in partnership with your patients, their carers, and family and friends within a framework of informed consent.
- Ensure pre-operative elective surgical care is planned, delivered in accordance to national and local evidence-based guidelines
- Provide patients with appropriate pre-operative advice and support, initiating referrals as appropriate to other members of the multi-disciplinary team
- Organise relevant pre-operative investigations as per hospital protocol and NICE guidelines.
- Exercise clinical judgement, and decision making in terms of the patients' risk and suitability for surgery.
- Liaise and/or refer to primary or secondary care providers to ensure pre-operative health is optimised.
- Promote health education and lifestyle changes to patients, as indicated.
- Participate with the informed consent process by ensuring patients are aware of the risks and benefits of the procedure.
- Evaluate and document the outcomes of nursing and other interventions, such as investigations according to guidelines and feedback as required.
