Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust

Specialist Screening Practitioner

The closing date is 16 March 2026

Job summary

The Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW) Bowel Screening Programme is seeking to recruit a full-time Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) to join our established and supportive team.

The programme provides screening services for individuals aged 50 to 75 who receive an abnormal result from their home bowel screening test. SSPs play a vital role in delivering high-quality care by working autonomously and supporting patients to make informed decisions at every stage of the screening pathway. All practice must align with Trust guidelines and national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme policies and protocols.

Applicants must be registered general nurses with relevant clinical knowledge and experience. Full specialist training will be provided.

Our screening services operate across three hospital sites: Royal United Hospital Bath, Great Western Hospital Swindon and Salisbury District Hospital. Travel between sites will be required, so holding a full driving licence is advantageous. Working hours are primarily within standard office hours, and bank holiday working is not usually required.

Main duties of the job

You will hold overall responsibility for individuals participating in the bowel screening programme, ensuring they receive thorough assessment, appropriate management plans, and high-quality, compassionate care. As a Specialist Screening Practitioner within the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, you will be expected to work autonomously while maintaining close collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and colleagues across all participating sites. Your role will support the delivery of a consistent, inclusive, and equitable screening service for the population of Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire.

As part of the National Screening Programme, this role is subject to extensive national audit requirements. It therefore demands strong IT skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. Full training and induction will be provided, including mandatory university attendance to complete the Specialist Screening Practitioner module at Level 6/7.

Please see attached Job description and person specification for full details of roles and responsibilities.
