Job summary
The Ophthalmology Outpatient Department have a vacancy for a full time Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse with at least 2 years current nursing care experience in an elective, trauma or outpatient ophthalmology setting.
The post is available full time - 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. The shift pattern is currently over four long days (8-6pm three days per week and one shift of 8.30-6.00pm) .
The post holder will act as a positive role model, promote effective teamwork and encourage continuous development in the department.
Alongside the Senior Sister, the post holder will be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. You will work as a deputy for the Department Senior Sister in supporting the performance management of the nursing team as well as supporting the co-ordination and facilitating the educational and development needs of staff in their clinical practice appropriate to the clinic environment.
The post holder will also be expected toundertake expanded practice competencies to become a practitioner in our intrevitreal injection service due to the increasing demand in treatment for people with eye conditions such as diabetic macular oedema, retina vein occlusion and age-related macular degeneration.

Main duties of the job
You will take overall responsibility for all patients in the department in the absence of the Senior Sister ensuring they are appropriately assessed, management plans are in place and the care they receive is effective, compassionate and of the best quality. You will regularly take charge of the department and be responsible for supervising others and evaluating the care patients receive.
The post holder will have the:
- Ability to assess patients, plan care for a group of patients, deliver care and evaluate the effectiveness of care given.
- Ability to organise own workload whilst supervising others.
- Good analytical skills for assessing and interpretingacute and other complexpatient conditions, recognize deterioration and take appropriate action.
- Good organisational and time management skills.

- Leadership skills including good interpersonal and communication skills.
