Cherwell Ward is a 17 bedded Female Older adult mental health inpatient unit based in the Fulbrook Centre in Headington, Oxford.

On Cherwell Ward we care for Older females with mental health illnesses, many of our patients will be detained under the Mental Health Act.

The ward team is made up of doctors, nurses and members of the wider multi-disciplinary team.

As part of the nursing team you will work under the direct supervision of the nurse in charge of the shift. The nurse in charge will delegates task such as supporting patients with washing and dressing, nutritional needs, monitoring of patients physical and Mental Health (training will be provided) supporting patients with their mobility.

Main duties of the job

  • To actively engage service users in meaningful conversation and therapeutic activity. Specifically, gaining an understanding of the individuals interests and incorporating these into the activities that are planned.
  • Written documentation of your observations and interactions with service users clearly and accurately on the relevant clinical system.
  • To participate as a member of the team in delivering care as prescribed in the individuals care plan.
  • Participate in the development, monitoring and evaluation of individual care plans. This will mean contributing your opinions and actively involving yourself in conversations whereby decisions are being formulated.
  • Develop therapeutic relationships as part of the on-going assessment and care delivery process, and ensure relevant information is reported to the trained nurse on shift.
  • Encourage and empower service users to be independent but assisting and supporting them to carry out activities of daily living when needs be.
  • Be aware of basic physical health monitoring that require observation and monitoring, knowing when to seek assistance and advice.
  • Escort patients with section 17 leave out of the ward. This is often on the hospital grounds but may also be outside of the grounds if consultant permits.
  • Take part in clinical supervision with your allocated supervisor.
  • Be part of the team and engage with our vision and aims for the ward.
