Job summary

We currently have a vacancy for a Community Phlebotomist working with the Central District Nursing Service.

This role would be to support the district nurse in The central District Nursing locality whereby you will provide phlebotomy care to patients who are housebound.

Main duties of the job

You must possess excellent communication and people skills; have the ability to work autonomously with little direct supervision, whilst being a committed member to our supportive team. Ability to travel independently across the central locality to fulfil the requirements of the post is essential. Experience would be desirable although not essential as full training can be given.Regular training updates will be given to ensure high standards of care are maintained.

Due to the nature of role it will require you to travel between rural community bases across Oxfordshire on a daily basis where you will attend to patients in their home setting. You must therefore be comfortable with driving for work purposes and able to travel freely within the hours of the role. Applicants must have a full valid driving licence and have access to a vehicle for work. Adjustments can be considered in line with the Equality Act 2010 where required

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To prepare patients, check their identity and ensure consent is given to obtain blood samples for laboratory analysis
  • Obtain blood sample from patients ensuring a high standard of the procedure is followed to reduce any risk of infection or contamination and strive to minimise pain, bruising, or discomfort to the patient.
  • In cases of difficulty in obtaining blood specimens refer the patient back to line manager or deputy line manager
  • Dispose of needles and all waste safely as per Sharps Policy
  • Ensure sample is of sufficient quantity for the investigation
  • Ensure all samples and requesting forms are accurately detailed and appropriately labelled for analysis.
  • Ensure all samples are returned to appropriate collection areas for same day testing using specimen transportation container provided
  • Ensure that patients are clearly informed where to access their blood results and how to arrange any follow up visits
