Job summary
The maxillofacial laboratory at Northampton General Hospital is seeking an experienced, motivated Technologist capable of manufacturing a wide range of medical devices.
The ideal candidate will have experience in maxillofacial prosthetics, intra-oral prosthesis and orthodontic appliance manufacture/osteotomy planning.
The laboratory is equipped with two 3D printers, intra-oral and desk top scanners and Materialise software. The candidate will be expected to attend two clinics a week and also attend theatre when required.
An informal visit is strongly recommended.
Main duties of the job
Provide management of the department in the absence of the Head of Department
Provide clinical, scientific, laboratory, photographic, medical device fabrication and advisory services to patients for their diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
To be part of the technical team responsible for and performing complex specialised work with a degree of individual responsibility including innovative developmental work and design.
Teach and mentor students on the School of Scientific Careers STP MSc course.
To treat patients referred for micropigmentation and tattooing if qualified to do so.

Reconstructive Science
To provide technical support for the following specialised services. (Non-exhaustive list provided to indicate range required).
Accept referrals from other specialities within the Trust.
Treat patients requiring facial and body prosthetics.
Attend weekly prosthodontic clinics, assisting in impression taking/intra-oral scanning and fitting complex obturators and dentures.
Attend theatres to assist surgeons in impression taking and fitting of complex surgical appliances.
Plan, design, and manufacture 3D cutting guides and reconstruction plates for major head and neck cancer and trauma cases.
Design and manufacture 3D models using MIMICS design software and Sprint-Ray/Stratasys 3D printers.
Treat Keloid scar patients with custom made pressure splints.
Orthognathic planning and model surgery.
TMJ splinting/bite raising appliances.
Mandibular advancement devices.
Surgical Cover Plates.
Orthodontic Technology

Manufacture, labelling and cataloguing of study models.

Liaise with clinical and nursing staff to ensure an efficient and effective service.
Take part in clinical and laboratory audit.
