Northampton General Hospital

NHS Locum Consultant Otologist (ENT)

The closing date is 22 October 2025

Job summary

This is a full-time (10PA), fixed-term locum consultant post for 12 months. The appointee will have a specialist interest in Otology, while also contributing to the general ENT service, including two-week wait clinics, general rhinology, and paediatric ENT.

You'll be joining a supportive and experienced consultant team within the combined ENT service across Northampton General Hospital (NGH) and Kettering General Hospital (KGH). The post is based at NGH, with cross-site sessions at KGH to support service needs.

Together, NGH and KGH deliver ENT care to a catchment population of around 800,000, with extended reach for specialised services such as Otology, Head & Neck Cancer, and Thyroid surgery.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will deliver a mix of specialist Otology and general ENT services across NGH and KGH. Duties include:

  • Outpatient clinics at both sites, covering Otology, general ENT, paediatrics, and two-week wait referrals
  • Theatre sessions for Otology and general ENT procedures, using advanced equipment including otoendoscopes, LASER systems, and nerve monitoring
  • Participation in the daily "Hot Emergency Clinic" rota and ward cover during on-call weeks
  • Contribution to Head & Neck and Thyroid MDTs, one-stop neck lump clinics, and specialist voice clinics
  • Involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including Leicester Medical School placements and Oxford Deanery HST rotation
  • Engagement in clinical governance, audit, and service development across the unified ENT service
  • Participation in a 1:8 non-resident on-call rota, supported by registrars and junior doctors

This role supports the ongoing transformation of ENT services across the county and offers exposure to a wide range of subspecialty work within a collaborative, forward-thinking team.
