Senior Clinical Fellow in Acute Medicine

Job summary

The appointees will join our 4 existing SCFs in Acute medicine within Urgent care who rotate monthly through our Acute Wards and SDEC. Two SCF each work on Esther White and Walter Tull wards and one other supports the consultant in the Same Day Emergency Care department (SDEC). Successful applicants to this post must also take part in weekend cover of SDEC every 5 weeks.

This post is suitable for doctors wishing to pursue a career in Acute Medicine who wish to gain further experience of the speciality either before starting Higher Specialist Training or to gain evidence and experience towards a CESR application. At NGH we are in the process of developing mentorship and support for doctors wishing to pursue the CESR route to Consultancy in Acute Medicine. These posts are also suitable for doctors wanting to further their experience in Acute Medicine before taking up HST in any of the specialities.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside their ward team of Consultants, Registrars, junior medical staff and multidisciplinary health care professionals. It is expected that they will take a leadership role on their ward and together with their SCF colleague mentor and support their doctors in training and junior clinical fellows.

The successful candidate will be allocated a Clinical Supervisor and encouraged to complete training assessments in line with other trainees at the same level. This includes access to a departmental Ultrasound machine with opportunity for training and development in this area and support to develop as a clinical educator.

We wish to appoint candidates with a good background in general medicine committed to a career in Acute Medicine, or who want to increase their confidence in Acute medicine before embarking on Higher Specialist training.

The post will be based at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust where the successful candidate will join the expanding Acute Medicine team, with opportunities for learning and development under the supervision of the consultant team.

The majority of training will be on-the-job with close involvement of the consultants. The department has a weekly teaching session and there will be opportunity to develop as an educator through support and training of junior colleagues.

There is a purpose-designed teaching programme for IMT3 and SCF covering generic skills and all the more challenging Acute Medical Presentations.Junior Doctors are encouraged and supported to take part in clinical case presentations.

In addition we offer dedicated patient safety lectures and practical training on procedures such as ultrasound guided CVP insertion. We have a state-of-the-art Simulation department who provide sessions both to doctors in training and those in Clinical Fellowships, and our Acute Medicine Consultants also provide monthly Simulation sessions. The full programme provides junior doctors with a comprehensive training package.
