Job summary

We are looking for an anaesthetist who is able to work in theatres, labour ward and the critical care unit although there will be the opportunity to discuss particular working and training preferences with the department leads. The majority of the year will be spent working in theatres and labour ward and part of the year will be spent working in intensive care.

Main duties of the job

This post will offer candidates the opportunity to gain new skills or consolidate existing knowledge, whilst also providing valuable clinical exposure. We will endeavour to support your training in areas you desire however please note that Senior Clinical Fellow / Trust Grade posts are not recognised for formal training.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The department provides anaesthesia for a wide range of surgical specialties including vascular, colorectal, maxillofacial, ENT, major gynaecology, urology and orthopaedics. The division has recently acquired a robot to provide surgery for some major urology, colorectal and ENT procedures. There is a busy labour ward and a new state of the art intensive care unit. We will do our best to accommodate specific interests in training in a particular field of anaesthesia.

The department has a well established local FRCA teaching programme which the post holder will be able to attend if they wish to attempt the FRCA examinations. The department holds regular teaching and training sessions in various topics which will be available to the post-holder. A study leave budget is available to aid further training and development.

The post holder will be given the opportunity throughout the contract to consolidate the knowledge, skills and attitudes learnt. You will demonstrate these in supervised practice and will be expected to practice at all times according to the principles set out in Good Medical Practice (GMC) including:

- Essential clinical and practical skills

- Communication skills

- Teaching and learning skills

- Personal and professional skills

On call commitments and hours of duty

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to out of hours cover (including nights) on either the general theatres, obstetrics or intensive care rota.

Working hours will be 48 per week as a full-time position. The successful applicant will work a full shift pattern and may share out of hours cross cover for nights and weekends with other teams. All rotas are based on compliant shift patterns that meet the requirements of the New Junior Doctor Contract 2016.

Any changes to working pattern will be compliant with EWTD targets and will be implemented as fairly as possible, but as a successful applicant you must expect to have periodic changes to your working hours as rota patterns alter and working practices evolve.
