Job summary
The Oral and Maxillofacial Department at the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Group is looking to appoint an enthusiastic Specialty Doctor with Oral Surgery experience to join our vibrant OMFS team of 5 Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeons and experienced SAS Grade Oral surgeons.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will be expected to undertake minor oral surgery procedures and routine oral surgery under local and general anaesthetic, as well as independently run outpatient clinics. You should be able to work independently; however senior support will be available.
We are also keen to support the professional development of candidates who may be undertaking this type of role for the first time. There will be fixed clinical sessions, but a degree of flexibility is essential.
Excitingly for this post we are offering trauma exposure for the successful candidate to develop their skills outside of routine oral surgery fields.
The post requires participation in the 1-in-6 2nd on call (middle tier) non-resident rota, which is fully supported by a non-resident consultant, and close supervision of junior 1st on call colleagues.
Teaching junior colleagues is important.
The agreed job plan comprises a total of 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week including 2PAs of on call.

A full range of diagnostic services are provided including MRI, CT and PET CT scanning. A full range of treatment is offered to patients including microvascular surgery free flap reconstruction including for bony defects.
The successful candidate will join the maxillofacial and orthodontic team to help provide a comprehensive service for our patients. The department has a strong reputation for the treatment of head and neck cancer with an exceptional free flap survival rate.
Northampton General Hospital provides radiotherapy and chemotherapy for the county. The appointment will involve the provision of clinics for oral surgery assessments in our outpatient department. You will be scheduled for Minor Operation Surgery (MOS) lists and possibly Day Surgery Theatre lists that you will perform independently. Working with Maxillofacial Technologists, you will be onsite to assess postoperative major head and neck surgery patients for rehabilitation with removal prosthodontic appliances such as dentures and obturators. A background in denture design is essential to lead this service. You will be encouraged to teach junior staff during clinical and non-clinical sessions.
The successful applicant should have an interest in advanced prosthodontics be a good communicator and demonstrate a commitment to working as part of a team that thrives on co-operative working.
