Job summary
The post holder is an expert specialist resource in diabetes in pregnancy. The post carriescontinuing responsibility for the delivery of high quality effective and sensitive care to womenand their families.
Act as lead professional for other midwives and health professionals with regard to diabetesin pregnancy, third trimester ultrasound scanning and appropriate referral.
The post holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide and co-ordinatehigh standards of care for women whose maternity pathways include diabetes and otherendocrine conditions.
Provides visible leadership and evidence-based information, expert advice, support andeducation to women and their families, and health professionals.
Leading day to day on the provision of services for pregnant women with diabetes. Sole pointof contact within maternity for referral management to the service.
Work closely with the SBLCB Matron, SBLCB Midwives, the Lead Midwife for education, thelead midwife for risk and governance, and lead midwife for quality improvement to achievekey deliverables.

Main duties of the job
Provide a visible, accessible, and authoritative presence, acting as a professional rolemodel by providing effective leadership and support within the multidisciplinary andmidwifery teams.Act as a source of expert knowledge for all staff involved in maternity care. Provide advicesupport and information, regarding the appropriate management and referrals of womenwith diabetes in pregnancy, including women with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes planningpregnancy.Communicate with the key stakeholders to maximise the success of SBLCB.Responsibility for the provision of expert specialised care for women under the Diabetesin pregnancy care pathway, ensuring that they are receiving high standards of evidencebased personalised and compassionate care.Work in collaboration with the diabetes nurse specialists and diabetes medical andobstetric teams. Build close liaisons with the multi-disciplinary team and communitymidwifery teams so as to ensure the coordination of a quality provision of diabetes is tothe highest standard and is maintained throughout the care pathway.
Act as a supportive professional role model for midwifery, providing midwifery care inaccordance with the NMC Codes of practice.

Able to organise and manage the unpredictable nature of referrals to pre-pregnancy,antenatal diabetes, and maternal endocrine service.
Organise and coordinate outpatient clinics for the services, ensuring appropriate follow on care is organised.
Represent both diabetes services at local, regional, and national meetings andconferences.
Attend the relevant forums in Maternity to share best practice, service improvements andthe relevant outcome data.
Co-ordinate team representation at Clinical Audit and professional meetings within thehospital and community and disseminate information to ensure effective communication.Act as point of contact with clinical director for National Pregnancy in Diabetes Audit(NPID).
Ensure effective and efficient use of all resources. Be aware of budgetary responsibilitiesand ensure adequate systems are in place for maintenance of equipment and resources.
Propose changes to working practice incorporating national and local recommendations,guidelines, targets, and available resources. Assist in the implementation of nationaldiabetes and maternity strategies and recommendations.
The post holder will work closely with the senior midwifery team to further develop relatedpathways and guidelines to assure appropriate and responsive care to women, babies,and their families. Contribute to specialist guidelines and policies for own area, includingleading and contributing to the way diabetes maternity services in the local area areorganised.
Influence and nurture positive attitudes and behaviours within the teams and widermultidisciplinary team.
