Job summary

Hello and thank you for your interest in this exciting role.

University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group (UHN) was formed in 2021 from Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Northampton General Hospital. We employ 11,000 colleagues who deliver high quality services to the population of Northamptonshire and beyond and our combined income is £1 billion. We are now advertising for the UHN Chief Executive.

We expect our new CEO to be excited by the opportunities for radical change, but they also need to recognise the risks. They will understand how NHS Trusts and Universities work together to deliver research, education and improvement and they will want to work closely with us to strengthen our relationships with our local communities and our system partners in the Northamptonshire Integrated Care Board.

Main duties of the job

The UHN CEO will be responsible for the operational and strategic leadership of UHN. They will lead on; supporting our organisation to become employers of choice, improving care and outcomes, reducing health inequalities, facilitating transformation and strengthening teaching and research.

We have a once in a generation chance to transform healthcare through our new hospital programme at KGH and the wide-ranging transformation programme will ensure the teams deliver the highest quality service and will significantly improve outcomes and care for patients and our local communities.

Collaboration and integration are now firmly the way to sustainably deliver population health improvements and we are excited about our developing provider collaborative between UHN and the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Both trusts are large multi-site providers of integrated patient care, research and education. Our combined turnover is £2.4 billion and we employ 29,000 people. Working together, we have a huge opportunity to make a positive difference to many people. The UHN CEO will work closely with me, as the Group CEO of UHN and UHL, to deliver collaboration at scale across UHN and UHL.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The success of the role is dependent on three factors; clear governance, a high trust relationship between the UHN CEO and the Group CEO and the relationship between the UHN CEO and UHN integrated leadership team. We have worked with nationally recognised subject matter experts to deliver clear and effective governance and we now want to recruit an outstanding candidate for this exciting role. I believe we get out of our working lives what we put into it. The scale and speed we want to change UHN will require the UHN CEO to work hard and to be committed to our plan. You will recognise that as the UHN CEO your role is to look after people (those who work at UHN, use our services and live in our communities), to take decisions, often difficult ones, and to provide hope and optimism grounded in reality. In return for this, you will receive as much autonomy and support as you require to be an outstanding CEO of a £1 billion organisation. Our future will not be easy, but it will be an exciting and positive one.
