Urology ST3+ Clinical Fellow

Job summary

The post would suit a urologist who is looking for clinical experience and to develop their portfolio in a supportive environment. The department has a strong recent tradition of Trust Grade doctors being successful in Urology ST3 national selection. More senior candidates would also be considered. The department has supported senior trust grade registrars through the FRCS Urol and CESR pathways. Prior NHS experience is essential.

The department has expanded over the years to deliver a comprehensive Urological service to our community. The Trust has the Da Vinci Xi system and we deliver robotic radical prostatectomy for the region. A full range of diagnostic services are provided in the recently developed Northampton Urology Centre (NUC) which is supported by a team of Urology Nurse Practitioners. There is a focus on ambulatory diagnostics, such as flexible cystoscopies, prostate biopsies and shock wave lithotripsy carried out in one of the procedure rooms and there are additional rooms which allow for administration of intravesical chemotherapy. There are a range of services delivered by our Nurse Practitioner colleagues which includes an erectile dysfunction service. One stop clinics, local anaesthetic transperineal prostate biopsies and TULA for recurring bladder tumours have all been recently developed within the NUC.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate must:take responsibility to ensure that Professional Registration is up to date at all times,does not lapse or expire, and to inform line management immediately with any concerns of if registration lapses or expires.be responsible for maintaining all own vaccinations that are applicable to the role.

safeguard patient confidentiality at all times, including adherence to the Data Protection Act.attend statutory and mandatory training and refresher courses as necessary.be aware of the responsibilities of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiative within the area of work and the Trust's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.have a commitment to identifying and minimising risk, report all incidents and report to the manager any risks which need to be assessed.ensure any other duties commensurate with the grade and in line with the requirements of the post.This post involves treatment of children and/or adults at risk, as defined by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It will therefore be necessary for the post holder to apply for and be in receipt of a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check.The Trust requires all new starters to subscribe to the DBS update service, where it is a requirement of the role.

This post is a single site role in a busy and dynamic unit, working in a team of consultants, registrar middle grades, CTs/FY2s supporting FY1s.

on-call commitment

1 in 6 for Urology (non-resident evenings)

Key Duties include:

  1. Urology ward rounds and ongoing inpatient care
  2. Attending elective theatre lists
  3. Attending outpatient clinics, including the daily One-Stop Clinics.
  4. Being trained and supported in the development of operative skills
  5. Working closely with Multidisciplinary teams, including cancer management
  6. Participation in Clinical Governance, including effective clinical audit, continuing medical education and mandatory training
  7. Contributing to departmental audit and research with consultant supervision. Opportunities are available to undertake personal research and enhance the CV
  8. Participation in teaching programmes for medical staff, medical students (University of Leicester and University of Oxford) and other hospital employees, as required.

Annual leave entitlement and study leave requests will be granted within the framework of the departments annual leave and study leave policies. Study leave is encouraged particularly in areas of interest to the post-holder.
