Job summary

To work with the Pharmacy Clinical Team to provide a comprehensive Pharmacy Service to adult medical patients and patients entered into clinical trials throughout the locality.

To be accountable, under the guidance of the Principal Pharmacist, Medicine for the medicines management service provided to patients, staff and the division of Medicine (particularly the Respiratory, Stroke and Cardiology specialties). To be a clinical specialist and support the Advanced Clinical Pharmacist, Clinical Trials in providing a specialist Pharmacy Service to the patients enrolled in clinical trials within Medicine;

Additional responsibilities within clinical areas as specified below:

Managing (planning, organising, monitoring, controlling, developing staff etc)

Main duties of the job

This role is a vital part of expanding the existing clinical trials portfolio and implementing new clinical trials. You would need to be ready to take on the responsibility and challenges of a senior and innovative position within a busy clinical environment, providing guidance to junior colleagues and maintaining your responsibilities as a specialist clinical pharmacist attached to medicine.

Your role will involve:

Clinical trials

Ensure that Pharmacy activity in relation to clinical trials complies with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

Provide training to junior colleagues for the delivery of clinical trials.

To provide support to senior clinical trials technician.

Work closely with the Research and Innovation team in setting up clinical trials within the trust.

Specialist clinical pharmacist

Provide a specialist clinical pharmacy service to medical speciality wards and clinics.

To maintain appropriate standards of service and safety; to enforce guidelines, policies and procedures to ensure standards are met.

To undertake validation duties in the dispensary.

To supervise, check and, if necessary undertake the supply of medicines.

To provide an Enquiry Answering Service for speciality-related enquires from other pharmacists or referred from other wards

Prepare new electronic prescriptions and procedural documentation for Cancer clinical trials, as required.

Assist with the training of Pharmacy staff in this area.

Liaise with Clinical Research Assistants and Clinical Trial Nurses.

To support the Specialist Clinical Pharmacist in the set-up and maintenance of clinical trials.

Support the Pharmacy Technicians in developing trial-specific standard operating procedures.

Education, Training and Supervision

Attend clinical pharmacy meetings and education/training schemes relevant to post.

To take part in formal and informal training of pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.

To be a supervisor on the Clinical Pharmacy Diploma course.

To supervise aspects of pre-registration training.
