Job summary

This is to inform that there is an excellent opportunity to join as Senior Clinical Fellow in Nephrology and Acute Medicine based at Northampton General Hospital from 7th February 2024 till 5th August 2025 and potentially renewable after that. The post has arisen due to the successful appointment of the current post holder to a national training number in Nephrology and General internal Medicine in UK.

The appointee will work across all aspects of Nephrology and will take part in the on-call rota for Renal Medicine in first instance at a registrar level and possibly Acute Medicine in future.

This post is suitable for doctors wishing to pursue a career in Nephrology who wish to gain further experience of the speciality before starting Higher Specialist Training.

Northampton General has an excellent reputation for training junior doctors and a long tradition of those doctors taking up Consultant posts with us. We also have a very high success rate in our Clinical Fellows achieving appointment to their chosen training programmes.

Key Internal Relationships:

  • Chief Executive of NGH
  • Clinical lead for Nephrology
  • Consultant colleagues in Nephrology, General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Vascular Surgery
  • Consultant colleagues in related specialties (Pathology, Radiology, etc.)
  • Specialist / Senior Nurse/Renal Pharmacists and Dietician

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside the team of Consultants, SpRs, junior medical staff and specialist nurses to optimise the running of Finedon Ward. The SpRs will organise their own rota for ward cover considering GIM commitments and leave.

The post-holder will work across all aspects of the service but will mainly be based on Finedon Ward and caring for patients with predominantly renal conditions. There will be close supervision by the consultants. The key aim will be to develop a broad-based knowledge in nephrology as well as practical procedural skills.

The successful candidate will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor and encouraged to complete training assessments in line with other trainees at the same level. Educational supervision will be provided and opportunities to develop further experience of nephrology will be available in specialist clinics such as PD/HD/Tolvaptan/Advance kidney care/transplant. The training programme is based on the JRCPTB core curriculum for Nephrology but will be specifically tailored for each trainee to complement their specialist training to date and ensure the programme meets the educational needs of the appointee.

We wish to appoint a candidate who has a good background in general medicine and who is interested in developing an interest in all aspects of nephrology. The experience offered should greatly enhance a candidate's appointment to Higher Specialist Training in Nephrology.
