Job summary

Work as an effective member of the team, providing quality care for surgical and oncology patients under the supervision of a qualified nurse. Promote good communication that supports the dignity and care of the patients. Assist in maintaining a safe working environment and the provision of compassionate care.

At all times to adhere to statutory, mandatory, care group guidance and the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England {Adopted and adapted for use at NGH January 2014)

To provide effective input into the work of the Trust, to support the achievement of our vision and values:

Main duties of the job

Safe manual handling of patients after establishing the best method, following completion of the assessment form by a registered nurse.

Meeting the patient's nutritional needs including supporting children at meal times, completion of fluid balance charts and food charts and reporting any concerns to the qualified nurse.

Documenting admission details which include next of kin, social situation, and details of patient property.

Undertake the cleaning of ward equipment and bed areas, prepare for admission.

Complete the Trust HCA Training Programme.

Complete the Care Certificate within the timeframe of four months from commencement in post

To be actively involved in own self - development.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Assisting patients to meet their personal hygiene requirements

Meeting the patients nutritional needs including supporting children at meal times, completion of fluid balance charts and food charts and reporting any concerns to the qualified nurse.

Take and record vital signs as requested, i.e. temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure, oxygen saturation and Paediatric Early Working Score (EWS) on observation charts and to report any abnormalities to the qualified nurse.

Safe manual handling of patients after establishing the best method, following completion of the assessment form by a registered nurse.

Be proactive in the prevention of pressure sore development.

Maintain the safety of children, their personal clothing and property in accordance with agreed policies related to security and confidentiality.

The collection of specimens as directed by the Registered Nurse and after training and competency assessed

Documenting admission details which include next of kin, social situation, and details of patient property.

Assist children in meeting their continence needs, i.e.: taking them to the toilet, providing a commode, monitoring urine and bowel movements. Report any abnormalities to a Registered nurse.

Recognise the Equality and Diversity of patients, clients, relatives and multi- disciplinary groups

Maintain a clean and tidy environment, including bed areas, store cupboards, sluice, treatment room and equipment used for procedures.

Undertake the cleaning of ward equipment, according to policy and procedure. Make effective use of the infection control policy.

Undertake the cleaning of bed areas, suction, oxygen, lockers and prepare for admission, obtaining any essential equipment.

Have the ability and knowledge to competently deal with an emergency.

Ensure that the individual is up to date with Mandatory and Role specific training.

Complete the Trust HCA Training Programme.

Complete the Care Certificate within the timeframe of four months from commencement in post
