Job summary

This post is suited to FY2-CT2 level candidates, who would like further training in urology and general surgery to advance their career and enhance their CV. Specifically, candidates will be supported to obtain the core surgical training competencies and MRCS qualifications, in preparation for applying for higher surgical training. This is a service post, but clinical and surgical training will be provided to suit the candidate's needs. The post holder may take up a whole time, maximum part-time or job share contract.

The successful candidate will work at Northampton General Hospital primarily with the urology team, but there may be opportunity to rotate within general surgery if the contract is extended.

The successful candidate will participate in the General Surgery SHO full shift rota comprising of 12 SHO grades covering Urology, Vascular and General Surgery emergencies.

Main duties of the job

on-call commitment

1 in 12 for General, Urology and Vascular surgery

Key Duties include:

  1. Urology ward rounds and ongoing inpatient care
  2. Attending elective theatre lists
  3. Attending outpatient clinics, including the daily One-Stop Clinics.
  4. Being trained and supported in the development of operative skills
  5. Participation in Clinical Governance, including effective clinical audit, continuing medical education and mandatory training.
  6. Contributing to departmental audit and research with consultant supervision. Opportunities are available to undertake personal research and enhance the CV
  7. Participation in teaching programmes for medical staff, medical students (University of Leicester and University of Oxford) and other hospital employees, as required.

About us

The urology department at NGH has consistently achieved excellent feedback from itsfoundation year doctors. You will be working as a part of a urology team with 3 FY1's, 3FY2's, 3 CT1's and 6 Registrars. You will be further supported by six urology consultants.The consultant ward rounds give opportunity for feedback & teaching and the post easilyallows completion of required portfolio assessments. Each FY2 will have a single namedconsultant clinical supervisor.There are weekly general surgical and urology teaching sessions. Monthly Mortality andMorbidity meetings are an excellent opportunity for presentations, clinical notes review andare a good learning environment.Trainees are actively encouraged to further their CV's by engaging in research projects andthe department has a strong recent track record of CSTs being successful in presenting atconferences, such as RSM, BAUS, WCE, SIU and ASIT.Annual leave entitlement and study leave requests will be granted within the framework ofthe department's annual leave and study leave policies. Study leave is encouragedparticularly in areas of interest to the post-holder.
