We are looking for an experienced Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist, to join our Macmillan therapy team; working alongside the Macmillan Specialist Physiotherapist, rotational Occupational Therapist and Band 4 Therapy technical instructor.

The successful candidate will be based on the hospitals' Oncology and Haematology ward, working closely with the Macmillan CNS', other AHP's and wider MDT to provide holistic care to patients undergoing cancer treatment at Northampton General Hospital.

The Macmillan Therapy Team is a dynamic and forward thinking team, having just secured funding for a cancer rehabilitation service, following a successful pilot.

Main duties of the job

To perform a specialised Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy role within the cancer multidisciplinary team covering adult cancer in-patients.

To lead Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy assessment and treatment for patients with highly complex respiratory, functional, mobility, equipment, psychological and palliative care needs.

To act as a role model for clinical, operational and professional leadership, setting and upholding agreed standards and processes to enable patients to receive high quality evidence-based care.

To support the implementation of the Cancer Recovery Package & Personalised Care Planning in line with National directives.

To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy services within the trust, holding responsibility for defined projects and activities and providing regular feedback to Therapy and Clinical leads.

To regularly educate and supervise Therapy staff members and students. Lead on teaching and training healthcare colleagues on aspects of clinical care relating to oncological & haematological Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy assessment & treatment.

Provide effective input into the work of the Trust, to support the achievement of our vision and values.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To manage a complex clinical caseload and demonstrate enhanced practice in holistic assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. This will necessitate high levels of autonomy and advocacy that ensures the delivery of appropriate care.

To make a professional contribution to the multidisciplinary discussion and treatment planning/referral decisions of the team at their regular meetings.

To demonstrate enhanced knowledge, skill, and innovative practice within the professional framework of Occupational Therapists/Physiotherapists. To ensure that there is a system of documentation that reflects this advanced practice.

To act as a role model demonstrating high standards of holistic care and provide clinical leadership.

To become acquainted with the national Cancer Rehabilitation Pathways for cancer patients, including knowledge of contact points for referral and advice.

To lead in developing policies and clinical guidelines in collaboration with the Therapy management team and Cancer Lead Nurse

To promote clinical excellence reflecting the Trust's strategies for the Allied Health Professions.

Lead on the writing & completion of the Macmillan Therapy Team Annual report.

Lead on the annual appraisal of allocated staff, collating a training needs analysis for the Head of Therapies to inform the development of workforce and training plans.

Maintain developed links with the palliative care team and site-specific Macmillan nurses at NGH.

Participate in the on-call rota (Physiotherapy)

Participate and assist in the continual learning of all staff so that personal development plans progress and succession planning is promoted reflecting the needs of the therapy services.

PROVISION OF CLINICAL SERVICES

Demonstrate and apply a high level of understanding of illness, injury and disability and the complex interaction between health, functional ability, psychological and social issues, as appropriate to Occupational Therapy / Physiotherapy within clinical area.

Identify, select, implement, and evaluate the most appropriate intervention options which balance the complex interaction of risk, safety, patient choice, independence, areas of conflict and eligibility for services, and provide such expert advice and support to junior colleagues. Act as an authorised signatory for adaptation and equipment requests as necessary.

Communicate effectively with patients, carers, members of the clinical team, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy colleagues and other agencies as a representative of the Therapy services or multi-disciplinary team at various meetings and forums as appropriate.

Maintain accurate and up to date records of clinical interventions, consistent with legal and organisational requirements.

Apply & further develop specialist & complex knowledge & skills to ensure fitness to practice as an Occupational Therapist/Physiotherapist within the clinical area in line with competencies detailed in the knowledge skills framework outlined for this post.
