This job is now closed

Job summary

We seek one Locum 10PA nephrology consultant to support the existing nephrology programme for 9 months including: inpatient kidney care, end-stage kidney failure, post-transplant care, and general nephrology outpatients. There is a strong focus in developing research and teaching portfolios for the department.

Posts will be expected to cover in-patients with consultant of the week model during which some of out-patient clinics will be reduced with majority of time dedicated to in-patients. Post holders will provide an on call renal service out of hours from home with 1 in 6 rota.

Outpatient activity includes two general nephrology clinics and one specialist clinic which may include looking after a transplant cohort depending on individual interests. Our usual clinic template is 4 hours with 2 new patients and 6 follow ups. Speciality clinics have 30 minutes follow up slots.

Post holders may participate in renal procedures, medical Tenckhoff catheter insertions and supervision of junior doctors carrying out procedures.

There will be strong emphasis on teaching and training of undergraduates and postgraduates.

Main duties of the job

DCC 7.5SPA 1.5On-call 1

Job planning in department of nephrology is annualized to 420 PA per annum (10 PA per week). A sample time table is as above, but may vary from week to week dependent upon commitments agreed at job planning. Some of admin work, audit, CPD and research may be undertaken flexibly at home agreed in advance with clinical lead.

Whilst the job plan is represented with 10 PA allocation the integration of specialist clinics and other interests may allow this to be increased up to a maximum of 12 PAs in line with NGH Trust policy.

SPA allocation is a basic 1.5 PA for consultants with the possibility of increasing up to a further 1 PA with additional roles e.g. clinical leads, appraisal, educational supervision, teaching, research and management positions.

About us

NGH is one of the largest employers in the area and all of our divisions are committed to doing things better, with more efficiency as we update, modernise, and advance. We have also entered into a Group Model with neighbouring Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Being a large DGH with a proud history, we are big enough to get interesting cases, but small enough to care, coach and develop. With over 200 consultants, a similar number of trainees and approximately 60medical undergraduates throughout the year, NGH provides comprehensive care and extensive training opportunities.

With this in mind, we have built a state of the art emergency assessment unit (Nye Bevan building) and are developing new ways of working to streamline in-patient care and optimize working with our partners.

NGH also has a large library, gym with swimming pool, and a brand new entrance with Marks and Spencer, Subway and Costa on site.
