We are looking for a caring, passionate, flexible and organised Health Care Assistant for an exciting opportunity to come and join our Gynae Ambulatory team. In this post you will contribute to the delivery of the best possible care in this busy and developing environment.

The post holder will work within the team to ensure the smooth running of the department and provide support and nursing care to patients and their families. In addition, they will help to support and assist health professional with procedures and investigations.

A vital part of this role will be acting as a support and chaperone to the patient. Therefore, we are looking for someone with excellent communication skills and can build trustworthy relationships with our patients quickly.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an integral member of the team, facilitating the smooth running of the clinic, including ensuring the environment is clean, safe and well stocked. You will support patients and their families during clinics and procedures. Sometimes women receive bad news and therefore having the ability to show empathy and act in a sensitive and tactful way when communicating with patients and their families will be fundamental to the role.

With the support and guidance of the surrounding team, you will assist clinicians with procedures.

Women attending the clinics can often be vulnerable, so it is important that the post holder is able to be alert to any safeguarding issues and escalate as required.

To be successful in the position the post holder will need basic IT skills and be competent in using computer-based programmes to support patient care.

The post holder will have the ability to work well with all members of our small team, and under the supervision and guidance of the nursing team you will undertake specific delegated tasks following the appropriate training and competency level training, for example venepuncture.

They will have the ability to assess the patient's condition and be able to recognise a deteriorating patients' needs and be able to implement appropriate care and escalate the situation to a senior member of the team.

Job responsibilities

Ensures effective communication takes place between patients and their advocates, all departmental staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Has the ability to use tact, discretion and reassurance when dealing with barriers to communication. To act as an advocate for all patients

Assist in the calling in and showing out of patients from the consulting rooms and be available to chaperone as requested.

Prioritise and organise patient care throughout their journey in Outpatients.

Assist in the preparation for patient examinations.

Maintain a high level of dignity and respect towards patients.

Assist clinicians to undertake clinical procedures as appropriate within the clinics e.g., Colposcopy, Hysteroscopy, Urodynamics, Vulval and Oncology clinics.

Undertake the training required to work effectively in all clinics.

Undertake routine testing of urine and recording results. Escalating any concerns or abnormalities to a registered practitioner.

Undertake, height, weight and BMI readings.

Undertake the routine collection of specimens i.e., urine, biopsies, swabs etc and label these correctly.

Undertake baseline observations i.e., blood pressure, oxygen saturations, pulse and record accurately, escalating any abnormalities.

Documentation, clear , concise and legible.

Blood taking.

Set up and use as appropriate, any equipment required in the clinical setting. Ensuring it is used in a safe manner. Clean and put away as appropriate, making sure any malfunctions are reported for repair.

Carry out general cleaning/ tidying, preparation of clinic rooms and the department to make sure the environment is appropriate for patient care.

Ensuring all areas are correctly stocked to maintain levels for a smooth and seamless clinic.

Awareness of correct cleaning methods/ decontamination.

Offer patient information (verbal and written), or directs patients for further advice e.g. Registered Nurse, P.A.L.S.

Recognise and promote diversity e.g. individual rights, culture and religions and beliefs.

Maintain confidentiality, privacy and dignity always following the Data Protection Policy.

Support patients and relatives having received unwelcome diagnosis.

Have an awareness and conform to hospital policies and departmental protocols.

The ability to develop and maintain own knowledge and skills using:

Clinical competencies, Care Certificate, Mandatory training, NVQ Level 2 & 3, Training.
