Job summary

The post holder will provide comprehensive medical equipment engineering management including maintenance, repair and commissioning to a wide range of clinical specialties. Assist in the whole life cycle management and support of all medical devices across Northampton General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Liaise with clinical, technical staff and suppliers to ensure medical devices are deployed and used safely and effectively.

Support the Head of Clinical Engineering in the selection, evaluation and acquisition of medical devices.

Liaise with medical device suppliers to obtain technical and commercial information in relation to equipment maintenance and servicing.

First line support of instrumentation interfaces to specialist clinical computer systems, liaising with IM&T to resolve problems as necessary.

Responsible for stocks and initiate orders to ensure the timely and adequate procurement of medical device parts and accessories to maintain devices in a serviceable condition.

In consultation with the Head of Clinical Engineering devise and develop planned maintenance schedules.

Take the lead on, and propose changes to, departmental processes and procedures.

Complete and review equipment and job audits to ensure quality and performance targets are met.

Participation in rostered on-call or shift system as required to deliver the Biomedical Engineering service.

  • BSc or equivalent in a relevant scientific, technical or engineering subject
  • Master's Degree (or equivalent level combination of post-graduate study and experience) in medical device or other healthcare related technology.
  • Registration with appropriate body such as IET, IPEM, etc.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of past achievements

Desirable

  • Management qualification
  • Project management training

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in leading a team of Biomedical Engineers
  • Extensive technical experience as a senior biomedical engineer
  • Extensive experience in planning, organising and providing maintenance and repair service covering wide range of specialist medical equipment
  • Sound grasp of Medical Device management guidance

Desirable

  • Experience working within the NHS environment
  • Experience of undertaking technical/clinical risk assessments on medical devices and have ability to find novel solutions to minimise risk where appropriate
