Job summary

We are seeking an experienced Directorate Manager to help steer, drive, support and deliver service improvement within the Maternity Services at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust.

You will be joining a fabulous midwifery and nursing family. Our aim is to be recognised for excellence in nursing and midwifery care and our ambitions are supported by an innovative and forward thinking strategy that places patients and staff at its very centre.

As a Directorate Manager with Maternity Services your role will be extremely varied and you will work closely with the Clinical Director and Matrons for Maternity as well as being part of the Division and receiving support from the Divisional Management team.

In order to be successful in this role, you will need a desire to learn and drive the service improvement agenda. You will also need to engage with all stakeholders in order to achieve financial and non-financial targets, as well as delivery of the Directorates annual plan which will enable you to demonstrate and develop your change management expertise. You will also need experience of co-ordination of project work to support ongoing developments within Maternity Services.

Having some knowledge about managing Maternity Services is desirable but not essential as support and guidance will be given to the right candidate, who has the desire and passion to learn and develop.

Main duties of the job

The Directorate Manager's key role is to drive and support delivery and service development within the team, with clear delegated responsibilities from the Clinical Director and to provide general management expertise to the Clinical Director and the team to enable them to effectively discharge their responsibilities and accountabilities to deliver the trust vision and values:

With delegated authority from the Clinical Director, take all appropriate managerial action to ensure the delivery of service, achievement of all targets, financial and non-financial and secure compliance with all regulatory and policy standards.

Advise the Clinical Director on actions needed to secure the delivery of national and local strategic, governance and operational service objectives and standards.

Support Clinical Directors by developing and supporting the delivery of annual Improving Quality and Efficiency Plans providing appropriate leadership for change management programmes. This role will also require some project management skills to act as a Project co-ordinator across maternity services

Collate information and maintain an overview of Clinical outcomes for the Clinical Director.

Work with clinicians and managers to identify information needs and to analyse and provide information to support them in the delivery of healthcare/planning and decision making.

Ensure that information provided is validated, accurate, appropriate, and presented to the agreed and defined standard.

Communicate results of work undertaken to a wide range of data users, both clinical and non-clinical in all formats including presentations using appropriate visual aids, this will include the presentation of detailed statistical information to non-statistical staff.

Attend meetings as required and support project management in the presentation and communication of information.

Maintain & provide internal & external data on clinical outcomes.Governance & Compliance

Advise the Clinical Director and Senior Team in Maternity on compliance with corporate governance, systems and processes, including policy matters. Support the development and delivery of the Governance agenda including clinical and non-clinical aspects of care and service; this will include establishing systems to monitor clinical standards

Responsible for collating evidence and monitoring Directorate compliance with corporate governance requirements such as Trust Standing Financial Instructions & Information Governance requirements.

Prepare reports for the Clinical Director and Divisional Manager on Governance & compliance as required.

Participate in and support the regular and routine reporting for internal and external requirement, within deadlines and to defined standards

Monitor and investigate data quality issues, ensuring problems are brought to the attention of the appropriate manager

Along with members of the relevant corporate departments be aware of national data standards and definitions and where applicable comply with them in relation to the analysis and reporting of activity and waiting lists.

Monitor and promote data compliance and IT security consistent with Trust policies and practices; be conversant and compliant with the Data Protection Act and the IT Security Policy.

Support the production of the annual audit report for the Clinical Directorate.

Patient safety

Ensure risks are placed onto the directorate risk register as appropriate.

Produce overview of patient safety performance for the directorate, highlighting areas of risk.

Collate information on incidents & Serious Untoward Incidents and outcomes from these.
