This post is to join the Specialist Registrar tier on the General Surgery Full Shift Rota.
Contract for 12 months Fixed term +/- extendable - Full time
Start date: July 2023
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work for 4 Laparoscopic Upper GI Consultant surgeons at Northampton General Hospital. We provide specialist services including benign Upper GI & Hepatobiliary surgery, laparoscopic repair of Complex Hernias, a full range of endoscopic services in our dedicated Endoscopy Unit and palliative Upper GI services (including oesophageal and biliary stents).
This post is suited to ST3-ST8 level, who would like further training in Upper GI Surgery to advance their career and enhance their CV.
The contract is a fixed term post for 12 months and extendable depending on satisfactory performance. The successful candidate will be expected to have MRCS. Duties will include the full range of elective clinical activities (operating lists, endoscopy, outpatient clinics, ward rounds), and emergency care provision in General Surgery, with a 24-hour dedicated emergency CEPOD list.
Main duties of the job
The Department of General Surgery has ten GI Surgeons (4 Upper GI and 6 Colorectal), contributing to a 1 in 10 General surgery on call rota for consultants. They are supported by 12 Specialist registrar Grades, 7 SHO-level grades and 9 FY1s.
In addition, we have three breast surgeons, six urologists and 6 vascular consultants. Vascular Surgery and Urology are separate specialities but there may be exceptional times when cross cover is temporarily requested.
The vascular services at NGH and KGH were reconfigured on 2 April 2012 to form the Northamptonshire Vascular Service, with NGH as the centre providing elective arterial surgery and 24/7 emergency vascular surgery and emergency interventional vascular radiology procedures for the patients of Northamptonshire.

This post is a single site role in a busy and dynamic unit, working in a team of consultants,registrar middle grades, supporting CTs/FY2s and FY1s.
Key Duties include:
- Upper GI and General surgery ward rounds
- Upper GI and General surgery theatre lists
- Outpatient clinics and endoscopy
- Being trained and supported in the development of operative skills
- Participation in Clinical Governance, including effective clinical audit, continuing medical education and mandatory training.
- Contributing to departmental audit and research with consultant supervision. Opportunities are available to undertake personal research and enhance the CV
- Participation in teaching programmes for medical staff, medical students and other hospital employees, as required.
- Participate in teaching and training of medical students from University of Leicester and University of Oxford.
- Participation in General Surgery Full Shift Rota 1:12 covering General Surgery when on call.
JOB PLAN
The elective part of this post will be covering Upper GI surgery. Elective activities will include inpatient and day surgery lists, outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists. A designated clinical/educational supervisor will be allocated.
Opportunities are available for teaching, audit and research. The department has an excellent track record in presenting data at national and international meetings, in addition to publications in peer reviewed journals.
ON-CALL COMMITMENTCurrently, we operate a 1 in 12 Full shift New Deal Compliant Rota for general surgery.
Annual leave entitlement and study leave requests will be granted within the framework of the departments annual leave and study leave policies. Study leave is encouraged particularly in areas of interest to the post-holder.
The hospital has an excellent Post-Graduate Medical Centre that has just been extensively refurbished with library, audio-visual aids, seminar and committee rooms, as well as a comprehensive range of recreational facilities, swimming pool, squash and tennis courts etc.
