Main Duties and Responsibilities
RESPONSIBILITIES
MANAGEMENT
Work collaboratively, support and manage support all members of the multidisciplinary team and always act as a professional role model.
Report all serious incidents to Matron/Head of Nursing or Directorate Manager and have the ability to support and manage the department in a critical incident.
Demonstrate excellent personal communication to all staff within the unit.
Promote interdisciplinary working, with outcomes aimed at the best interest of patients.
Demonstrate appropriate assertiveness and ability to challenge others when the rights of patients and others may be infringed.
Demonstrate that patients involved in both decisions affecting their care and wellbeing, and in service development.
Be responsible for ensuring the clinical area practices within Data Protection/Confidentiality.
Ensure that all staff adhere to the Trust and Unit policies and acted where appropriate
Ensure all staff comply with mandatory training requirements and lead on staff appraisals
Accountable for budget including all pay and non-pay expenditure.
To participate in and ensure team involvement in clinical governance and Risk management.
Ensure staff have a clear understanding of patients pathway.
Manage E-rostering effectively, ensuring staff adhere to the trust policy for booking and taking annual leave/time owing.
To manage HR polices and proactive management of sickness and unauthorised absence.
To undertake the recruitment and selection of staff to the team, ensuring assessing the skill.
CLINICAL
Act as role model for professional practice for staff demonstrating evidence based clinical specialist expertise ensuring the highest standard of nursing care is maintained at all times. Ensure the excellent patient experience is maintained.
Regularly monitoring and evaluation patient outcomes.
Work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team in improving the planning and delivery of all aspects of patient care.
Ensure that all relevant information regarding the patient is communicated to other disciplines as necessary and is correctly documented.
Assisting and co-operating with other disciplines and wards/departments in the total care of the patient.
To support Clinical Governance within the unit to maintain/improve and develop high standards of patient care.
Work with patient's to ensure their experiences are at the core of service delivery.
Monitor and audit the quality of care through a range of strategies, including risk management incident reporting, complaints, research and effectiveness monitoring and clinical audit.
Ensure standards of clinical competencies within assessment are developed and evidence of ongoing clinical competency is adhered to.
Ensure nursing care is patient focused and that patient dignity and privacy are maintained at all times.
Ensure staff work to towards trust values for patients and colleagues and that equal opportunities are practiced.
Maintain effective communication with the department.
Ensure all complaints are listened to and issues identified are addressed and resolving all complaints and communicating to the staff.
Ensure that prescribed medications are safely stored and administered and to monitor, report and investigate all medications errors.
Adheres to infection control policies and assessing all professional who interacting in patient care.
Responsible for Quality Improvement Strategy, planning and implementation within the clinical area.
EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
To hold relevant post registration course.
Be responsible for own professional development and to identify own learning needs in conjunction with the Matron.
Provide a positive learning environment for all staff.
Act as a mentor and assessor for pre-registration, post registration and non-registered support workers.
Lead the development and implementation of the unit specialist training programme ensuring competent practitioners.
Ensure student learners on clinical placement are appropriately supervised and assessed and have effective learning experience
Responsible for ensuring the collation of data for national and local statistics.
Maintain personal records of continuing professional development in order to meet revalidation and Jag requirements.
Identify ongoing training and updating needs for others knowledge and competence for the role required.
OTHER INFORMATION
The post holder may be required to carry out other relevant duties as required
The post holder will be expected to participate in the Trust's objectives, contractual obligations and governance agenda.
The post holder will make themselves familiar with, and adhere to, at all times, the policies and procedures of the Trust
The post holder will adhere to, at all times, any Professional and NHS Code of Conducts for their area of work.
The post holder will be expected to work to any Directorate/Department objectives and standards set in order to provide an acceptable level of service.
The post holder will act, at all times, in a courteous, dignified and respectful manner when dealing with patients, staff and visitors to the Trust
It is the responsibility of all staff to minimise the Trust's environmental impact by, for example, recycling wherever possible, switching off lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use, minimising water usage and reporting faults promptly.
Health and Safety
The post holder is expected to ensure a healthy and safe environment exists in the department at all times. They are expected to take reasonable care for their acts or omissions. Trust policies and statutory regulations should be adhered to.
Confidentiality Attention is drawn to the confidential aspects of this post. Any breach of confidence may result in disciplinary proceedings, which could result in dismissal and may also result in civil action for damages
Information Security The postholder is expected to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data, whether in computerised or manual systems or storage. Trust policies and statutory regulations should be adhered to.
Risk Management To ensure that clinical and non-clinical incidents are reported, recorded and analysed to improve the safety and quality of the service. To assist with risk assessments.
Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Non-Health Records Management The postholder is expected to comply with Trust policies and procedures on the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Non-Health Records Management and other regulations for the management of Public Records. The Trust requires that all staff contact the Freedom of Information Manager for advice and guidance on all matters pertaining to the Freedom of Information Act. They must also ensure that Freedom of Information requests received directly are referred immediately to the Freedom of Information Manager.
Infection Control The post holder is expected to adhere to and promote compliance with the Trusts Infection Control Policy and associated codes of practice and take appropriate action where non-compliance is evident
Safeguarding The post holder will comply with legislation and Trusts policies relating to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
Statutory and Miscellaneous
Takes responsibility to ensure that Professional Registration is up to date at all times and does not lapse or expire and to inform line management immediately with any concerns of if registration lapses or expires (all registered staff).
This post involves access to patients and their data include children and/or adults at risk, as defined by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It will therefore be necessary for the post holder to apply for and be in receipt of a satisfactory Standard DBS check. (this statement relates to patient facing but non clinical roles)
The Trust requires all new starters to subscribe to the DBS update service, where it is a requirement of the role.
Be responsible for maintaining own vaccinations that are applicable to the role.
Safeguard patient confidentiality at all times, including adherence to the Data Protection Act.
Attend statutory and mandatory training and refresher courses as necessary.
