Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and committed Paediatrician, withan interest inPaediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology for 12 months fixed term appointmentto cover acolleague'ssabbatical.Applicants with other complementary special interests will also be considered where these align withour serviceneeds.

The post has clinical responsibilities covering services to children within the Acute Trust in conjunction with the other Consultants working as a team providing elective and emergency children's acute service for children of North Northamptonshire.

Main duties of the job

The Consultantsoperatea Paediatricconsultantof the week rota for the Children's wards.There is aseparatePAU consultant of the week Monday to Friday 9AM to 5.30 PM.The

The Paediatricconsultant of theweekis responsible forall in-patient paediatric admissions during the week and for all paediatric emergencies during regular working hours. The out of hourson callis shared amongst consultant colleagues. Attendance at morning and evening handover is expected. Clinics are cancelled during the Duty Paediatrician week to provide full ward / emergency cover.

All paediatric and neonatal consultants partake in a shared rota covering the paediatric assessment unit 0900-1730hrs; 5 days/ wk.

The newly appointed consultant will join the team of existing consultants to deliver a high-qualityemergency and elective paediatric service.

There is scope to have dedicated time in the job plan, to enhance and further develop the sub-speciality service delivery alongside the transformation programme. The Group model helps to enhance collaborative working as a county wide approach to speciality services with increased opportunity with a larger case mix, opportunities for research and enhancing excellence in paediatric care in Northants.Participation with consultant colleagues in clinical governance arrangements for the NICU, general paediatrics, safeguarding and areas of special interest to develop practice and buttress existing frameworks is essential.

Children and Young People Services are part of the Family health Division, led by a Chief of Division, a Divisional Director and Head of Nursing. Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, are each led by a Clinical Director.

The Paediatric ward relocated in May 2013 into the purpose built 'Foundation Wing' housing the new paediatric Skylark Ward and paediatric assessment unit. The Paediatric Assessment Unit has been successful in reducing short term acute admissions to the children's wards. It is now co located alongside the inpatient facility. In addition, two high dependency beds were established, and further cohesion achieved by the close proximity to ITU and theatres.

Our LNU cares for babies over 27 weeks' gestation with 16 bedded LNU with 2 intensive care cots 6 high dependency and 8 special care cots. The unit is well supported by and engages actively with the East Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network and participates in The National Neonatal Audit Project.

During the working week, theon-callconsultant is resident till10pm and non-resident till the following morning(0900hrs), available for emergencies.

On-call paediatric consultant attends handover and undertakes the ward rounds when on-call, Weekend on-calls are split with one consultant covering Friday and Sunday and is then Duty Paediatrician for the following week. A second consultant is on call for the Saturday. During on-calls on-site presence will be from 1700 to 2200 hrs with on-call from home till 0900. Consultant of the week is on call from 0900till 1800 withadditionalhour (1700-1800) for handovers and urgent reviews. The consultant is expected to do ward rounds on Saturday and Sunday mornings and provide onsite cover from 0900 to1700 hours.

TEACHING /RESEARCH & AUDIT

The Trust recognises the importance of continuing medical education and the budget funded by the Trust is held by the Medical Director.

Excellent, teaching and education and library services are provided with an active Postgraduate Medical Centre.A newpurpose-builtLibrary and Education Centre with a Clinical Skills Laboratory is available tofurther enhance the teaching facilities.

Protected teaching is provided on Tuesday,Wednesdayand Thursday lunchtimes.A regular teaching programme including induction for junior doctors is in operation.

Final year medical students areallocatedto the Department from Leicester University for their training all consultants share in the programme.

Regular supervision and workplace-based assessments for junior doctors are inplace,and the successful consultant would share in these duties.

Research and auditaresupported by an active Quality Governance Unit. The department actively supports research and has been part ofnumerousneonatal and Paediatric multi centred studies over the years.

MENTORING

Mentoring is available for all new consultantstaff;this is designed to help andassistnew appointees to settle into working at Kettering General Hospital as easily as possible.It is designed toassistindividuals in a personal way to familiarise them with the Trust and how things work in practice.
