Biomedical Scientist Diagnostic Cytology- Band 5
We are seeking an enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist for a Band 5 position in Diagnostic Cytology, incorporating non-gynaecological cytology and andrology.

The Cellular pathology department receives over 18,000 histology cases and cytology receives over 4000 non-gynae and andrology specimens per year. We are UKAS accredited and registered with the IBMS as a pre and post registration training laboratory. We are a continually improving department, striving for high quality staff and processes. We serve to expand the knowledge and skills of all grades of staff. There are plenty of opportunities to become involved in, and further development is encouraged.

Main duties of the job
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
You will work as a Biomedical Scientist in the Cytology Department and report to the Cellular Pathology Manager.
You will work as part of a team to provide a high standard Andrology service performing diagnostic tests to support the infertility and post vasectomy services and to support the non-gynaecological cytology service in the preparation of samples.
Practical training will be provided in-house leading to competency in basic semen analysis and completion of 'The Association of Reproductive and Clinical Scientists' (ARCS), Certificate in Basic Semen Analysis (Module 1) or equivalent if required.
You will accurately provide data entry and reporting of samples on departmental LIMS.
You will participate in internal and external Quality Assurance initiatives and ensure continuing compliance with UKAS.
You will communicate sensitive information both to patients and staff ensuring dignity is respected at all times.
We are looking for someone who can work comfortably within a team but also with the skills and confidence to work independently.
Excellent communication skills both face to face and on the telephone are required. You should be able to work accurately and efficiently demonstrating good organisational skills. The role will be diverse reflecting the nature of the Cytology department.

- Welcoming patients and their representatives to the andrology clinic, being courteous and helpful at all times.
- Participate in all andrological laboratory procedures including primary care referral for diagnostic semen analysis and post-vasectomy analysis according to SOPs, meeting the necessary UKAS, ISO or other standards as relevant.
- Participate in the technical preparation of diagnostic cytology specimens under supervision and in accordance with written procedures.
- Observe departmental protocols concerning the confidentiality of patient information.
- Cleaning work areas after use so that they are ready and available for the next operator. This will involve working with biological waste, fluids and infectious hazards.
- To work to internal and external quality standards including participation in an external quality assurance scheme (NEQAS). Take an active part in preparing for internal and external audits and inspections.
- Arrange appointments for patients and deal with telephone and email enquiries.
- Assist in the proper documentation of all procedures.
- Participate in internal and external quality assurance programmes as appropriate.
- Assist with computerised entry of patient and specimen data.
- Assist in general laboratory duties as required.
- Such other duties as may be reasonably required by the Laboratory Manager.
- The jobholder is expected to undertake training in order to:
- Maintain HCPC registration.
- Complete The Association of Reproductive and Clinical Scientists (ARCS), Certificate in Basic Semen Analysis (Module 1) or equivalent.
- Actively complete regular CP
It is essential that a high standard of dress and conduct be maintained to the satisfaction of the Laboratory Manager.
