Job summary

University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group comprises Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Northampton General Hospital Trust.

In order to embed a culture of Quality Improvement throughout UHN, we are recruiting for a Quality Improvement Training Lead to lead on the development and delivery of our set of QI capability and training courses, aiming to improve the capability and confidence of our staff in delivering QI.

Main duties of the job

Our Quality Improvement (QI) Team aims to deliver our priorities, support the development of a continuous learning culture and build improvement capability throughout the Group.

Our QI Training Academy aims to build capability and capacity across UHN for Quality Improvement, ensuring a sustainable QI training programme is in place open to all staff across all levels of capability and confidence in QI methodology.

The post holder will lead on the planning, co-ordination and delivery of our integrated QI training curriculum across UHN, incorporating our MSc Quality Improvement & Patient Safety delivered in conjunction with the University of Northampton, our Quality, Service Improvement and Redesign (QSIR) programme and our online QI training offer.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Ensure there is a clear and engaging QI training and capability building strategy for the Group to improve the level of improvement capability within the Group.
  • Lead on the development of a range of capability building programmes aiming to improve service delivery using and teaching quality improvement methodology
  • Ensure that there is an appropriate training resourcing model to effectively run the QI training programme as outlined in the Groups ambitions.
  • Work closely with the QI coaching team and the transformation team to ensure members of staff working directly on improvement projects appropriately access QI training courses
  • Ensure that QI training is accessible to all staff and represents an inclusive offer
  • Support individuals and teams with the development of academic posters and submissions to academic conferences and research publications to promote QI
  • Lead the Quality Improvement and Service Redesign (QSIR) programme including the QSIR Practitioner and QSIR Virtual programmes.
  • Be a subject matter expert and teach QI methodology to clinical and non-clinical teams across both Trusts as described in the QI strategy. Use up to date evidence through research in the planning of such sessions.
  • Participate in appropriate training and development activities including sharing learning to plan, develop and deliver effective teaching and learning sessions.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with the members of team UHN who are a member of the QSIR training faculty, and ensure recruitment to the QSIR training faculty is in line with the requirements of UHNs training delivery plan.
  • Lead the development, planning and implementation of a high-quality curriculum for the MSc Quality Improvement & Patient Safety.
  • Provide support and preparation for QI and safety workshops, courses, conferences and other events.
  • Communicate effectively with senior partners both internal and external to the organisation to negotiate with and motivate on all the training programmes within the QI portfolio. Engage with multiple educational databases, software and platforms for learning and teaching.
  • Provide leadership and management support to the Quality Improvement Training Academy members in order to ensure appropriate covering of responsibilities and development of team skills.
  • Ensure appropriate management of staff involved in QI training to sustainably support the QI Training Academy, including ensuring appropriate qualifications are in place, feedback is provided and regular reviews of QI training capability. QI trainers are both within the QI team which is directly line managed by the post-holder, as well as individuals in the wider organisation who have protected time for training.
