Job summary
This is a specialist service and is an excellent opportunity to develop a more effective, responsive and flexible Liaison Psychiatry Service for both the elderly and working age population within South Tyneside District Hospital.
The service operates on a 24hours/7 day per week basis. There are extensive opportunities for service development, especially in the wider context of the NHS Long Term Plan. Provision of all-age Liaison services across the UK aligns with NHS Long Term Plan ambitions.
You will join an experienced and well-established multidisciplinary team (MDT) of Liaison Nurses currently working with patients from across the adult age spectrum.
Medical input has been provided hitherto on a less than full time basis and a restructuring in funding provision has underpinned the creation of this new post. The team operates on a 24 hours/7 day per week basis and sees patients referred with any mental health presentation, self-harm or suicide attempt from the Emergency Department within 1 hour. It aims to see inpatient ward referrals within 24 hours.
Main duties of the job
To provide psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and formulation to patients admitted to South Tyneside District Hospital
To assess and make recommendations under the Mental Health Act.
To provide (or ensure referral to the appropriate service for the provision of) up to date, evidence based interventions for the patients admitted under the post holder's care.
To collaborate with GPs, Community Treatment Teams and primary care clinicians on follow-up arrangements for patients assessed within the acute hospitals.
To provide leadership, consultation, advice and guidance within the multi-disciplinary Liaison psychiatry team
To work collaboratively with Senior Clinical Colleagues in the Urgent Care team.
To work collaboratively with colleagues in other specialist mental health teams and develop proactive links with the community services; particularly with a view to developing more robust pathways into appropriate follow-up care once discharged
To take a lead role with the Team Manager and other colleagues in service establishment, development and improvement.
To contribute to the ongoing training and development program within the team.
To train and supervise junior medical staff, medical students and other allied professions.
To lead, collaborate and advise on research and audit projects in the team, within the clinical governance agenda.
To complete administrative tasks necessary for the fulfilment of the post
