Job summary
This is a community post working with an established community Learning Disability mental health team serving the Sunderland area.
The consultant in post will work closely with the community team.
The post holder will provide senior expertise in assessment and treatment of adults with learning disability referred with psychiatric, behavioural concerns.
As part of this role there is a population of Learning Disability Forensic patients living within Sunderland area for whom the post holder will have responsibility.
The community learning disabilities team is based at Monkwearmouth Hospital Sunderland.The post holder will have good links with the other consultant colleagues within learning disability services.
Currently there is one specialty doctor working within Sunderland community learning disability in addition to current vacant post.
There is access to a comprehensive Multidisciplinary team :
- community nurses with specialist areas of expertise including Forensic, Autism, Primary Care and Behavioural
- Psychologists
Occupational Therapist
There will be opportunity for mental health work, teaching, audit, and SPA activities.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be working across 3 pathways which include:
PBS pathway- this is based on the principles of Positive behavioural support and applied behavioural analysis for behaviours that challenge. The post holder will be supported by various professionals with the team to develop a behavioural plan and will be consulted to aid formulations as and when required.
Mental Health and Well-being Pathway- which will include diagnosing and managing mental disorders and promoting well-being in the ID population.
Physical health pathway to support our patients with physical health problems and work closely with primary/other secondary care services to help them get the right support and care.
As part of this role there is a population of Learning Disability Forensic patients living within Sunderland for whom the post holder will have overall responsibility. There is however an established Forensic Outreach team providing input as per the Forensic pathway.

- MBBS (or equivalent)
- Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT
- Approved under Section12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
- Approved Clinician Status

- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
- Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
- Has undergone training in educational supervision
- Has undergone training in appraisal
